Here is a question for the singers out there: Is there such thing as vocal training or is singing all raw talent? Also, what is the process of writing a song like? How do you combine lyrics with music. I know lyrics are the melody while everything else is harmony. I think if I were to write a song I would write the melody tune, then find lyrics that matched it and finally fill the rest in with harmony. Is this how it works?

Of COURSE there's vocal training. A lot of singers are naturally talented, but not all are. Most do have their own weaknesses, and training can help expose these and constant practice can help eliminate them (or at least lessen them). My own weakness is going from my bass voice into the cutoff space just before reaching falsetto (not sure exactly what the term is). It's very weak, and when I was in vocal chorus, my teacher recognized it and gave me individual training on strengthening it (all of which I've forgotten by now, as it was 15 years ago).

As to the other questions: I don't know the answers, so I'm not gonna respond.

Absolutely, there is vocal training. Just like anything you want to do, you study to get better.

As far as writing music.... As much as I would like to be, I'm not a songwriter. Living where I do, I know several songwriters. (Mostly, ones you've never heard of now, but maybe someday!) I can say that different writers have different processes for writing a song. Some start with the words, others start with a tune. Sometimes they don't even really have a firm idea of either, but just start with an idea. It's not easy!

BTW, the lyric of a song is the words. The melody is the tune.

The reason you'll get a different answer from everyone is because there is no right way. Some songs follow the songs melody very closely, others not at all. My favorite vocalist has said he sometimes chooses a word or lyric because of it's sound, not meaning. He has never had any vocal training and has by far one of the most dynamic voices I hear today.

I'm the sort that singinggirl described last. I just sorta tap whatever it is inside me and let it go without any idea where it's going. It's always been like that for me. Often times even I don't understand what comes out. It is what it is - a creative outlet, and we all use the same tools slightly differently.
