Guitar Questions....it takes time to get your fingers coordinated so they don't keep touching other strings. If you like the sound of the classical guitar, you can play any kind of music on it. Some people feel its sound is only for classical or flamenco music. Flamenco guitar is not really harder than any other guitar techniques. Try out some right hand patterns in that style and be patient as it takes doing them at least 100 x per day for two weeks to get them smooth. It is important to take lessons as there are specific bits of information that you will have a very tough time finding on your own. Teachers provide keys for moving forward.

I am a guitar instructor and have been for over twenty years. Good luck with your playing and persist through all the foibles and flaws.
In one year you will wonder what you were ever worried about!!

I've been playing since 1978...

Nylon strings are usually what's used on a classical guitar. The neck is a bit wider and that makes it harder for most people to play barre chords (where one of your fingers lays across most or all of the strings), but these are easier on the fingers and you don't as often run into the problem of brushing against other strings.

No particular type of fingers needed. I have relatively short fingers and can do OK on barres usually.

It takes a bit to get the callouses...and you have to maintain them too (file or emory board them) or they peel off. Fortunately I found that even when I didn't play for a while, my fingers apparently build them back up pretty quickly.

You can definitely play melody with an acoustic guitar!!! I often play in a finger picking style (unfortunately I taught myself so I don't do it technically right but the teacher I have been working with this year says that my style works too...). Several songs that I've written use the guitar to play melody and are definitely acoustic. Usually these are "arpeggiated chords" ... ie., where you are plucking the notes of a chord individually instead of strumming the entire chord. You can do a lot with that and I knew that style before I started learning to play electric recently. Now I'm trying to memorize the various scales and figure out how to use them to play blues and rock.

Good luck with it. I'm trying to get back into it seriously again, picked up my 4th guitar recently (a nice electric (Les Paul); I have an old beatup 6 string, a nice 12 string and a nice 6 string acoustic electric too).

I'll add one thing to this discussion that I don't think has been mentioned. Make sure your guitar's action is set up properly. An improperly set up guitar has frustrated many beginning guitarists because it can be very difficult to play and it is virtually impossible to get a good sound. The internet is full of very useful how-to guides on acoustic guitar set up leading you through adjusting the neck curvature, saddle height, and nut slots. It's not difficult and will be time well spent.

Oh, and if you bought it new from a music store don't assume the action is set correctly. Most are not.

Hope that helps

Agreed!!!! And it's well worth it to spend a few dollars to have it professionally set up! I just had mine all worked on and the difference is huge.
