Any fans out there? The Pre-fab four take a lot of slack for not being a REAL band. People had a fit when they found out they didn't play on their first album but used studio musicians. What they fail to realize was that both Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were musicians and Micky Dolenz played guitar but because of time schedules, they didn't have time to come together as a "band". Everyone today uses other musicians. Even the Beatles used Eric Clapton, Billy Preston and various studio musicians. Most of their critics probably were not musicians themselves. The fact of the matter is The Monkees did come together as a band and recorded their OWN album in "Headquarters." The played concert tours in the '60's and reunion tours in '86 and '96. They all went on to have their own bands after the show went off the air. So thanks Mike, Peter, Davy and Micky for laughs and music. Best of luck to Peter with his current battle with cancer. You can beat it Pete!!!!

Hey, hey, we're the Monkees!

I think I might have an old album of theirs around here somewhere.

My only Monkee-related claim to fame is that I once saw Micky Dolenz at a club in L.A. (he didn't sing, though!).

They were a fun phenom wheil they lasted...

I have fond memories of the Monkees when I was a kid, but I ran into Davy Jones acting like a jerk at a restaurant about 8 years ago, and I must admit it's tempered my view somewhat. I think I posted that whole story once upon a time, but I have no idea where it is - it was a long time ago. To review it in brief, Davy Jones was playing at a venue in Dewey Beach, Delaware; and had gone into a family restaurant next door for dinner. He was accompanied by a rather obsequious larger gentleman who was apparently in his employ; and two older-and-should-have-known-better groupie chicks. The restaurant was crowded and there was a wait - just a short one, but too long for ol' Davy. I was also waiting for a table in the small lobby and saw the whole thing. He made a scene in front of the two college-age hostesses, who had clearly never encountered such diva behavior before. He said loudly that Dewey Beach wasn't the sort of place it had been before; this restaurant had really gone down and they didn't know how to treat people anymore, and he was going to tell "everybody I know". As I don't think that the majority of Dewey's visitors are from England, I didn't see this as much of a threat, but it worried the young hostesses and when their VIP (Very Impatient P****s-breath) visitor grandly announced, "I'm going to demand the next table for us", they gave it to him. It should have, of course, gone to the next name on their list - mine. So my (then) little girl and my elderly mother and I had to wait several more minutes for the next table.
The next table turned out to be a lovely one by a large, open, picture window; with a cool breeze and a lovely sunset view of the boats on Delaware Bay. The table that we should have had, where Davy & co. were now seated, was right in the middle of the restaurant, with a direct view of the swinging kitchen door and two tables full of children on either side. Each of the families at these tables had an adorable, but presently screaming, baby. One of the groupie chicks kept eyeing our table with a pouty mouth that may not have been collagen-enhanced, and the male lackey/employee looked very nervous as boss Davy just glowered.

I enjoyed my evening thoroughly.
