Was there. My new wife (who passed away last summer after 31 years of marriage) was 4 months pregnant with our son. Got the T-Shirt. Partied down...

Actually, it was some guy on an acoustic guitar who started the show, followed by Bob Welch (with a guest appearanceby Stevie Nicks, who washis former bandmatebefore Bobleft Fleetwood Mac), and then Dave Mason appeared.

When Santana came on, the crowd finally got on its collective feet because ofhis intense Latin Rhythms which Carlos made famous. People started to dance and move around. I think it may also be due to the fact that many of them were there for over a day just to get a good spot. We drovedown the night before and actually setup our blanketright next to thesecondary speakers in the arenaabout 300' out from the stage with plenty of room around us. By 6:00pm, the crowd was pretty packed, yet everyone respected everyone else's "space", which was usually a blanket on the ground.

Santana really rocked, including a couple of drum solos, but then, what would you expect from a rock group where driving rhythms dominate the musical style...?

When Ted Nugent came onstage, he had just flown in from an African Safari, and he was suffering from 10 hours of jet-lag. His choppe landed backstage with only 20 minutes to spare. As we waited for his appearance, the solid cloud cover that had beenpresent all day (keeping temps rather cool) had a triangle-shaped hole that was approaching where the sunwas in the sky. The moment he jumped onto the amps from behind, the Sun broke through and bright yellow streaks painted the crowd. It was almost a religious experience, and act of God, if you will...

Ted rocked our eardrums out for about an hour, including two 10-minute encores. After his last encore, he was suffering from severe dehydration and had to be led away in a blanket. Talk about giving it your all!... The very next day, Derek St. Holmes (guitarist and vocalist) left the band. Most people don't know that it isDerek's voice on such songs as "Stranglehold" and "Hey, Baby". They have since made amends, and Derek has actually recorded with Ted on some albums a few times since then.

Rubicon, a "Frisco-based horn-driven band in the style of Tower of Powerfollowed Ted (I think..).

When Heart come on, they were at the top of the charts with "Barracuda", and had already established themselves with "Magic Man". Needless to say, they put on quite a show. By the time they left the stage, darkness was falling and the lights were starting to play a factor in the onstage presentations.

Aerosmith followed Heart and they were also at the top of the charts. I remember Joe Perry tossinghis guitar out into the crowd and yelling "Happy Birthday, Mother F***er!"

After Aerosmith concluded there 3-encore set, we decided to beat the massive crowd, so we began the trek towards the gate, and subsequently locating our car in the vast sea of automobiles. As we approached the gates, Frank Marino and Mahogony Rush began their set. He is a Hendrix protege', similar in style to Robin Trower and Stevie Ray Vaughan. One comedic highlight was after he finished Hendrix's Purple Haze, he went into an instrumental rendition of the old original "Mickey Mouse Club"theme song. We couldn't believe our ears, and knew it wasn't the (*ahem...*) assorted drugs that were being passed around during the day. This was real, and was actually funny.

It was a day to remember, and it was definitely a lot cooler than Cal Jam 1 that I also attended, where the temps were over 100 and people were suffering from the heat and lack of water.

The 2 concerts were as different as night and day. The 1st one had a lot of "Heavy Metal" rock, whereas the 2nd one was a little more diversified.

Take care, and I hope I have helped you see through my eyes what you weren't able to experience yourself.

* Mack reminisces...*

Oh ya I can remember some of it. our party had 6 in it we all came up from San Diego and it was crazy. for the whole weekend we just jammed out, I remember it was getting cold as the sun sat and alot of people were building small fires. who ever it was that was on stage at the time stopped playing untill they were put out. we were about 100 yards out and off to the left of the stage. all day both days there was a river of people streaming in close to the stage to it was flowing man what a party.

Im trying to remember what the name of the music was the played between groups at one time o found it and had it on LP but its long gone now I wish I could hear that again. If you were there you know what I'm talking about WOW

Wow! What an expereince. The enndlesss traffic. Worrying about getting busted with all our stash.the dust that got kicked up as we were herded around the track. the awesome music. Waiting till the last minute to pee and having to wait and wait and wait to use one of the50ANDYGUMPS with thousands of other people who waited till it was too late. I waited like an hour and a half. I still remember sitting there trying to go- I had held it so long- my bladder was paralyzeed. I sat there deep breathing as Sentimental Lady by Dave Mason was playing. all I could think of was the hundreds of ladies in agonywondering what the hell was taking me so long. it'sthe one and onlytime I remember havingPENIS ENVY as I watched guys pissing in baggies, beer bottles, cylindrical containers of all shapes and sizes, in corners, wherever they could get away with it. The reallystoned people who couldn't move went in their pants.Everyone was beyond wasted. I was way the hell in the back with a group of 9, we spent the night- it was awesome waking up to Here Comes the Sun as it actually was. Songs from this concert provide me with some of my all time favorite "take me back memories." I saw stuff I'd never seen before- and havn't seen since. Does anyone remember the woman whowent intolabor and had to be air lifted away? or the fewv who OD'ed to the point of needing medical attention? Remember the radio station's call: KMET twidley dee! What a crazy concert. We were behind the chain link fences when someone or a bunch of someones crashed them down and away we all went! We had a giantic picnic basket full of "munchies" to get us through. I'll never forget the guy that lost his group and stood in the same spot wrapped in a blanket holding his lighter until it finally died in hopes of them finding him. The group parachute display was great, alittle hard to keep looking up as I recall. The music was awesome and believe me when I say we would have liked to have stayed and partied another day or two!

I remember getting there. Waking up during Foreigner. The next thing I knew I woke up, the concert was over and there was only a few people left there besides my friends I went with. I was totally wasted. I miss those days. At least what I can remember. I'm going to go see Foeigner in January 09 at Emerald Casino, Seatle, Wa. And I'll be wasted again.
