I know it's an old movie, but I finally saw it. I was absolutely captivated by Daniel Day-Lewis and the whole story, partially ficticious as it was. What a world it was back then.

Kudos to Leo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz for outstanding performances as well.

Did you read the book? NYC was downright wretched in those days.

Excellent movie and one of Martin Scorsese best efforts. I honestly think this was the one he should have won the oscar for, along with Daniel Day Lewis.

I did not read the book, but I understand it was riddled with untruths about Five Points. For instance, the claim that there was a murder a night was refuted by historians. Apparently, there was a great deal of dirty work going on--prostitution and theft--but not a lot of killing as the movie would suggest. That doesn't take away from the sheer nastiness of the history, however. After I saw the film, I spent some time researching the Draft Riots, Tammany Hall and the real "Bill the Butcher." What an amazing story. Have you had a chance to read it? I'm curious to learn more.

I second both of your motions. I do understand that the movie garnered many nominations, but it was trumped by another flick that year. Now the oscar for best song? DON'T agree--no offense to U2.
