Life is about making choices. During the civil rights movement, a handful of women in Jackson, Mississippi choose to expose a quiet injustice.
I like this one. Made me laugh and cry. Could be labeled a chick flick, but guys should see it also. A part of history that real people lived through. Possible date conversation starter.

I also thought it was a great movie. I had recently read the book, and I thought that the movie did a good job of boiling the book down to the key elements. Sometimes in the process of editing the book to fit the the 2 hour movie format, it gets really watered down. And, it was definitely not just a "chick flick".
I did have a problem with how they marketed the movie. The ads made it look like a comedy. Sure, there were some comical moments, but it was really more bittersweet than "funny".
I virtually never see movies more than once or buy them, but I did think The Help was a great film. I also enjoyed the book & mitchell's comments were spot on. The world sure has changed a lot in the past 50 years.

Agreed. The advertisers must have thought a comedy would bring more viewers in. Very bittersweet. I have a very hard time 'placing' myself back into a time when you could get fired for using the bathroom.
Will search for the book. Sounds like a great read.
I loved the movie too -- just finished the book yesterday; equally good, and filled out the characters and story more. That was the author's first published novel ... I love finding good new writers.
I haven't seen it but heard it was "a'ight" (my 8th graders use this term to mean "allright"...I'm in a juvenile mood this morning I guess...lol)...but I loved The Avengers!
But then I never choose a drama flick when I go to the movies, which is maybe 3 to 6 times a year. Sappy dramas bore me and I always wind up falling to sleep....and Netflix has all but killed my need to go. I figure I'll catch it on cable anyhoo. "The Help" is being shown next month on Cablevision so if I feel the need, I will watch it then. It's on my very long list of movies raved about that I'm lukewarm about seeing. I could never figure out the hoopla over "Eat, Pray, Love"...or "Sex & the City"...I've never watched them...nor felt the need to.
The only time I consider it even worth going to the movies and plunking down my $12 to $18 , it better be worth the money. Anything in 3-D or action flicks is what I'm looking for (Summer Blockbusters and Holiday Season Blockbusters are the best).
...chills and thrills...blood and gore...yeahhhhh babyyyy!
(told ya'll I have a juvenile streak...but I is who I is...)

Maybe I should read the book...I read "Cold Mountain" and then saw the movie...wonderful book. But I still refuse to read "Eat, Pray, Love"...sounds like a dumb book..and the trailers looked like an even dumber movie...not interested in that kind of drivel. Who cares if some woman in her 30's (?) is trying to 'find' herself?..I been trying to find myself for years and ain't found me yet...maybe I should write a dumb book about my life...lol
....and Sex & the City?....hated the show and certainly had no interest in seeing the movie. Now...if the movie included her splaying Mr. Big with a machine gun after dealing with all his nonsense...then being arrested and then going to court...then using an abusive girlfriend/abusive spouse defense...getting off 'scot-free'...and then becoming a vigilante fighting for abusive women or women who are in relationships with men who keep them hanging on to a bare string until he decides what he wants to do..and throw in a light-saver or Japanese Wakizashi sword for really special effects...my interest would have definitely piqued......(unfortunately, my sisters felt it was my civic duty as a woman to be kept informed of the tv show and thought I was some sorta Communist because I wasn't interested in watching the show or the movie...so I am a teensy bit versed in the antics of the concept of the show/movie..but not enough to wax-poetic..)
But then I mostly read historical non-fiction, so whattaIknow?...
