First I want to say that even though this is a remake of the original 'True Grit', some people may not have seen it so please no spoiler comments!!!

Personally I was skeptical. I've always found that remakes are a poor second to the original and are usually have poorly written dialog. I've also not been fond of westerns.

This remake was a surprise to me though. It is well written with realistic dialog that I would expect to hear coming out of my grandparents mouths. It went from action scene to action scene, making sense, and keeping my attention rather then letting me get bored while they build the plot-line. It's also very well acted with characters that are not only developed in looks, but in personality. The cinematography was very good and the scenes were put together well.

I feel it's an excellent movie and am planning on seeing it again, and likely to buy it when it's released on DVD.

It's the Coen brothers - I expected them to deliver, and they did.

Just to be clear, the new "True Grit" is not a remake of the 1968+1 version. It is a new adaptation of the book. It was a completely new script and does not reference the older film. To call it a remake is like saying that every "Hamlet" or "Romeo and Juliet" movie is a remake of whatever ones were made earliest.

That being said, I thought it was a terrific movie on any number of different levels. After seeing it, I was curious enough to also read the wonderful book and watch the earlier version (which I had not seen previously). It was really interesting to see how each scriptwriter and director interpreted the source material. Although much of the dialogue in both versions was taken directly from the book, it doesn't necessarily come across in the same way in both.

Overall, I thought that the new TG was much more true to the book (e.g., both the beginning and ending in the first version were completely fabricated), and the acting far, far better than in the 1968+1 version. There were some excellent character actors in the earlier version, but Kim Darby was pretty awful (and her performance pales even more in light of Hailee Steinfeld's remarkable turn). John Wayne was pretty much the same in whatever he was in, so either you like him or you don't. Personally, I enjoyed Jeff Bridges much more...

I, too, strongly recommend the movie, but especially recommend also reading the book afterward.
