Last night I saw 'Due Date' ~ dear Lord, there's an hour and half of my life that I'm not getting back. I ought to be able to sue.

It's Robert Downey Jnr on a road trip through Arizona and Texas ~ as a key word search of things that I love this should have been a gift of a formula.

How did they manage to make it so awful?

"Hollywood" makes movies that research indicates will have broad appeal; they make them in a way that research indicates will appeal to the masses of "Mr/Ms Average." That's how, unfortunately.

RDJ-appreciation aside, considering all the good movies coming from other-than-Hollywood, why waste more of your time?

I don't subscribe to that 'if it isn't art house, it can't be good' school of thinking and I watch a lot of subtitled and low budget cinema.

I think Hollywood is a mass marketing excercise in common denominators and that's frequently a recipe for something easily digestible and easily forgetable, but it also creates good stuff. Modern sci fi needs big budgets and there's a place in everyone's heart for an action movie or ten and they're harder for the independents.

Maybe Hollywood finds humour the most challenging genre because of the potential for offense and consequent alienation of specific market segments. So the jokes are scared and neutral. In Due Date the 'jokes' (and I use the term loosely) were all about bodily functions, hilarious when you're 12 no doubt, but I haven't been for a really long time.

I thought it was lazy and cheap and entirely beneath Robert Downey Jnr who is an excellent charactor actor ~ at least he used to be (before he married that Hollywood producer woman) hmmmm ...... we appear to be on to something after all.
