Well they are hard to resist for a reason eh?

The psychology of food cravings
According the researchers, these findings indicate that "engaging in a simple visual task seems to hold real promise as a method for curbing food cravings."

So what do you guys do about food cravings?

I wonder if any other intentional change of focus (other than visual, as used in the article) would work to ease the craving - like a physical activity, or listening to music, or beginning a conversation?

I'm intrigued by the question of why the cravings can not only be very specific, but also varied. I'll crave something creamy/cold one day, creamy/hot another, salty/crunchy, salty/wet on yet other days. And then there's chocolate - which can also have to be either creamy, salty, hot or cold.

Fascinating stuff.
And I normally handle the craving with as little of the item as I can. One Hershey's kiss. Or 3 salt and vinegar chips. Sometimes it even works.

This was my strategy for a long time, and it did help. I absolutely love Hershey Chocolate bars with almonds. And those World's Finest Chocolate bars are just evil What I did several years ago was to get me a bag of those small bite size chocolate bars with almonds and eat one or two of those a day to deal with the craving.

Over time I changed to a strategy that whenever I'd get a crazing I'd eat a small bite of something that was somewhat healthier, but still tasted good and satisfied my sweet craving. For instance I really like those mellow creme pumpkins and candy corn so I buy up a bunch of bags during Halloween and eat a few a day for as long as they last. I also eat maybe a few starburst jelly beans. These things don't fit within a strict healthy diet, but they're not so bad either. Sometimes it only takes a little bit to make the craving go away.

Sounds like a lot of us do the same things.

I am not a big sweets lover, but sometimes I will get a craving at night. I will have about 4 jelly beans and a junior mint. I keep the Junior Mints in the freezer. Then I walk away. Not kidding.

I can't stop at just a few. I'm too much of a completist.

i have to substitute- if i want something crunchy, i have celery sticks, if i want something sweet, i have an apple. if i want chocolate, however, there is no stopping that. I've tried chocolate yogurt or having a small peice but i always end up eating more. so i go with it.

Certain types of the months food cravings hit hard - and not for fruit and vegtables either. I just give in typically because I figure there's no denying it. I just figure when the hormones kick back to normal I'll be able to resist better. I usually have M&M's in the house because I can just grab a few. Also Snack pack puddings have low calories and a big chocolate taste. I also like pudding pops - only 80 calories.

I think some people have a craving for sweets and some for salt. I am more of a salt person. Too much of either is a bad thing. Moderation in everything.....at least that's what my step-grandfather believed and he lived to be 107.

This is kinda what I do too. But it's usually a craving for something really bad. Like a Big Mac.

I will get a kid size burger with the Big Mac toppings ... I don't know that it's a great solution, but I've learned if I don't satisfy the craving, it will just push me to eat other bad things until I finally just give in and go have at least some of what I'm wanting.

As for why we have cravings at all .... I really think it's usually bc of something in the food that we're lacking and needing. Like those women in third world countries who crave a certain type of clay ... turns out it has certain minerals in it that their bodies needed.

So I feel like satisfy a little of the craving whatever it is. Eat it in moderation until it's satisfied.

I used to think that, but why do i crave Oreos? there is no vitamin or mineral in Oreos that my body needs.

It is not easy to tell the difference between a "comfort" craving and an actual physical need at times..... mind you, I am convinced that there is some sort of addictive substance in the Big Mac special sauce lol.....

Chocolate is a biggie for me, but I indulge in a little bit of the really good stuff and that seems to satisfy it quite nicely.

Other things that are "bad" for you? Well, I stay away from the low cal, low fat etc versions of anything - they just do not do the trick for me if I need an indulgence......

Oreos - they are a food group lol!
