Is it worth the expense?

I'd really like to find someone who's done this program before and tell me what the experience is like and how it compares to "going it alone."

I'm attracted to it because of the help they appear to offer in proper food selection and the in-person accountability.

I'm pretty low-income, but I'm severely overweight and I think that, if this works and can help me rewire my brain to do better for myself, then it would be a sound investment.

I'm pretty knowledgeable about nutrition and biology.. on the chemical level of things, but if you dropped me off in a grocery store and told me to buy a healthy meal I'd just stare at you dumb-founded. I'm trying to learn to cook, too, but it's all without guidance. I also don't really have friends or a support group that can help me with this particular undertaking, so having the in-person accountability would be a huge boon to someone whose tempted daily by the seductive allures of a chocolate-caramel candy bar sitting in the office vending machine. :P

I tried Jenny Craig (and Weight Watchers and Lite 'N' Easy) and it was not successful for me. I tend to lose 10kgs and then nothing. Unless they've changed how they charge for things, it was extremely expensive to buy their food, as you had to buy per meal and snack, rather than them creating a price for one week's worth of meals. Whereas with Lite 'N' Easy, it was something like $120/week and that was everything except milk for cereal and tea/coffee and water.

However, my unsuccessful experience aside, one of my male colleagues lost quite a lot of weight doing Jenny Craig and has kept it off. He looks fit and best of all: happy.

It is important to realise that it isn't a diet, it is a lifestyle change. If you are not ready to make a lifestyle change and stick with it, you will be setting yourself up for disappointment. So, it really is important that you don't eat or drink extras. For example, because the nutrients are all worked out for you, you can't go and add a glass of juice, because you'll cause an imbalance in your calorie intake.

Jenny Craig should still offer a free consultation. Have you done this as yet to check out menu selection and pricing etc?

I've not yet done the free consultation; I'm sitting at work, and where I am now it's 4am. I'm going to wait until later today once the sun's up to give them a call and arrange for a free consultation.

I just want to know more about what I'm walking into. I know a lot of commercial programs, for dieting or not, may try to mislead or sugar-coat things and I just don't have the extra cash lying around so this is a fairly serious decision.

I really want to change my lifestyle, as you said, but where I am now is all I know -- so I just really need actual help that I can't get by scanning blogs or reading cheesy self-help books. If anything, to just get me pointed in the right direction to start.

If you are looking for something to point you in the right direction, this might be the thing for you.

It is very structured which may help you do gain the self discipline needed to actually change your lifestyle - that is what you have to do in the end.

I have friends who have been on that diet, and it does work, but as soon as you go off it the weight comes right back IF you go right back to your old habits.

If you go about it with the right attitude, well, in the long run this might work out for you. What you need to remember is that this is a starting point for the rest of your life, not a "get out of fat jail free card"

Oh, and the thing about the expense of it all, well, funnily enough once you are not buying all of the other crap you used to buy it might end up being a money saver for you.

Have you tried any of the free online resources like sparkpeople or caloriecount ? Many people find them just as helpful as Jenny Craig et al and they have the advantage of being free. If I recall correctly, sparkpeople will even make menus for you and give you grocery lists.
