As many of you will know from my previous posts, I've been losing weight for the last 2.5 years, after having my stomach banded. I'm not gaining weight now, but I'm not losing either. I reckon I have around another 25kgs (55lbs) to drop yet. To land me squarely in a medically accepted healthy weight range for my height.

So, today I dragged out my exercise machine, which I have had for six years and today was the second time I used it. The first time, was before I had my surgery, and the agony in my knees ... no way was that going to work out. I managed 7 minutes all those years ago!

Much to my relief, no pain at all in my joints. I worked on the machine for about 25 minutes. (I didn't think to time myself - I listened to six Black Eyed Peas songs on my iPod. lol!) As far as I can tell, I appear to have an Elliptical Trainer and I can 'cycle' with my feet forwards or backwards.

I could feel my muscles from just under my ribs to my calves burning at different times, except for abdominal and inner thigh muscles. Anyone know if this is normal? Or if the machine should work those muscle groups too and I'm doing something wrong?

I am not familiar with the elliptical trainer. I had to Google it.

You probably have some sort of info you got with it when you purchased it. I would be sure to read that, and I might even go to their web-site.....or call the company if I was concerned.

Or if you know anybody IRL that goes to a gym.....they might know.

Good Luck, Meri, on your final push!

Unfortunately, the company I bought it from no longer stock it and I can't find the manual which came with it.

However, it definitely does work more muscles than I had initially believed, I was rather surprised to find myself a little stiff in the shoulders yesterday!

No problem hopping back on yesterday afternoon, only the burning feeling came back more quickly, so I had to alternate a lot to keep my heart rate up.

I nearly forgot: YouTube had a whole bunch of little clips which I watched.

Good for you Meri.

I have luck finding user manuals by googling the model number and brand -- even on discontinued items so you should try that. Often there are different programs to focus on different parts of your body. However abs and inner thighs are likely not going to be worked while doing the elliptical.

Do not overdo the exercise. If you have not exercised much you might want to start with every other day for a while or do different exercises different days. One day do the elliptical the next go for a walk for half an hour. You will exercise your body in different ways and thus are less likely to injure yourself.

Wow Meri, congratulations!

I'm not familiar with that machine so don't know the answer to your question. Perhaps you could call around to gyms to find one that has this machine, and then go do 1 session with a trainer? and ask any questions you have.

However a rule of thumb of exercising is to do more than one type of thing, because no kind of exercise or machine provides everything.

Meri, the elliptical is such a great machine. I would stay on one as long as I could when I had a gym membership. Great way to get your heart rate up without doing something high impact. Much easier on the knees.

I mainly used it for cardio and then added weight machines and sit ups to my routine.

One very important thing you must do is stretch. You might feel your legs hurting more during the day if you don't stretch after you do your exercises.

Thank you.

It was going quite well until I got sick and can hardly breathe without coughing! I got in five days straight before the lurgy settled in and I was fine ... burning in the legs during the work out and no stiffness at all during the day. The fifth day, I was able to work out for one extra song too.

I'm all frustrated - I want to get back to it, but reason I should probably not when I can't breathe properly. lol

Same thing happened to me this week. Got pretty sick on my 7th week of my training program...I'm going to have to restart the week once I get rid of this nasty virus. In the meantime, I'm letting my body fight off my sinus, throat and lung infection. Yummy!

I really recommend a combination of weight training and weight-based cardio.....your muscles will burn away fat just as long as you keep your sugar intake and salt down as much as possible.

For inspiration and some free advice and exercise tips, check out the AthleanX channel on Youtube....

You don't even need to go to a gym to get lean and ripped....just a bit of self-motivation, know-how and persistence to make a difference.

Wishing you wellness,
LK

Recovery is an important part of any routine, and it can't be ignored. Working out everyday is a good idea, but working out the same thing everyday is not. I love the P90X workout system. I don't have to think, I just push play on the DVD for that day. It has all the things a great workout needs with warm up, stretching, and cool down included, and different muscle groups for each day. You really can't go wrong. Just push play, think of a number, do your best (and forget the rest!), and write it down (another crucial part of any workout). This'll all make more sense if you do some research on the P90X program.
