I am so sick of constantly having breakouts on my face. Its not all over-just one or two at a time, but its always those deep cystic ones that are so painful. I'm in my thirties-its ridiculous! Just had to vent.

Btw, does anyone have any quick remedies for the painful cysts?

I'm in my thirties and also get one or two nasties around the same time every month. They are usually in the crease of my throat.

I had very bad acne in my teens and am most fortunate I did not scar. If you have not seen a dermatologist, I highly recommend getting your GP to write you a referral.

If I drink mostly water, stay away from high sugar drinks and also use a soap alternative, this does seem to help keep my skin clearer.

Ugh. Unfortunately, there is no cure. And, no really quick treatments (your dermatologist can inject some cortisone, though, into an inflamed cyst to reduce it).

You sound like a good candidate for Accutane; have you been through a course of that yet? It's a very harsh treatment with potentially risky side effects (e.g., it's critical not to get pregnant), but it can be very helpful for controlling cystic acne.

It sounds like you have exactly what I had. I never had acne all over the place, but I'd get a few very deep cystic ones. Usually on my neck or jaw but occasionally sometimes on the face or even my chest. It was very embarrassing since I was in my late twenties and all my other friends had grown out of it.

I had a friend who recommended Accutane like neardc said. My dermatologist had previously put me on a number of antibiotics which never seemed to work. So I got my dermatologist to put me on the Accutane and it was seriously a wonder drug. I still get the occasional small red pimple here and there, but I've never had any kind of cystic acne since.

But yeah, there are some serious side effects so be sure you read up on those. My friend claimed the Accutane was why he started balding, but I took it and I still have all my hair. You want to make sure you don't get pregnant at all while you're on it because it would give you an alien baby. The pictures were seriously creepy. You have to get blood tests done every month. And my lips got really dry. I was constantly applying chapstick. And supposedly it can cause depression but I always felt fine. So it's not anything too egregious but it is a little more annoying than your standard side effects.

It's also very, very expensive so make sure you have good insurance with a flat copay on prescriptions. I don't know if the price has come down since, but when I was taking it I was on the generic brand and it seriously was like $600/month. I worked at a small company at the time and I strongly believe I was the reason the insurance rates shot up the next year. But I had a flat copay so it only cost me like $20/month.

You have to be on it for like six months, but after that you're fine and clear and never have to worry about it again. Despite the setbacks, I would strongly recommend it if you're still having those kinds of problems at our age.

That being said, Accutane doesn't work for everyone. You're supposed to take it for six months and see results for the next six years. I took it for six months and then after six months my acne was back. I went on a second round and it lasted even less time. But, it did give me near perfect skin while I took it.
The potential side effect are creepy, although all it did to me was give me bleeding noses.
