Congrats! McDougall has a great program. I am a vegan myself, and I feel so much better than ever... and I have also dropped weight. Plus it's nice to know I'm not contributing to animal slaughter.

Thanks so much for all of the words of advice here!

One of the nice thing about McDougalls is the recipes he and his wife have available. When I began it was prior to the internet so I bought his cookbooks. Now many of the recipes are online.

He also advocates cooking from scratch-eating fresh veggies, complex carbs, grains and fruits and nuts..all amazingly healthy things.

Tonight for dinner I made a rice pilaf with fresh broccoli and served it with tofu sausage..Morningstar Farms makes a great tasting number of meatless meats like products made from grains and tofu..things have come a long was since Gardenburger had one patty for we vegetarians.

I also use Quorn bits in spaghetti sauce to replace hamburger..along with plain old TVP that has been around for years/decades even. This year for the first time in 35 years I had no garden to eat from..as I was moving I didn't plant anything out..boy do I miss my fresh corn and tomato plants, my squash and salad makings. Next spring at my new house, I'll have a big compost area, which I am already composting into, and to it I'll add a mix of top soil and organic mulches and grow a much smaller garden..after all I don't have an acre any more.

I really want to encourage those of you who are battling overweight to exercise and find a workable diet plan to stick to..and do it when you are young. It gets much harder when you get older!

I love that I look so good now..and I'm frequently taken for 17 years younger than I am..at 67, I look 50. I owe it all to good diet and exercise daily, along with an active life and, hopefully, regular sex (j/k..it's been a dry spell on that front for me lately)

I started my weight loss exactly a year ago and it's been going extremely well.

Dropped down from 252 to 175. Three more pounds and I'll have reached my goal!

Now it's just a matter of toning and re-building my core muscles. I always exercised but I never seriously watched what I ate.

I keep to 2,000 calories a day, which isn't starving myself by any means. Don't go out of my way to eat especially healthy, but junky food just isn't worth the calories they have. (More than a half of my calories for the day for a Big Mac and large fries? No thanks!)

The key for me has been being really strict with counting my calories, in an out. (Food and exercise.)

Keep with it and the results will come.

That is wounderfull. I am type 2 also but not an inslent yet, my Dr has been threating with it. we are more at risk for hart desed and Hi colerestrol problems becuse of the excess blood sugers. how I try to control it is with dite and exercise, but I could not do it with out the pills.
I have never undderstood what this good carbs/bad carbs things are I talked to some friends who were into working out for mussel tone ect and when I told them my problem they told me to forget it. Every onetalks agout calories but for the dibetic the carbs are the thing.
I am suprised tht your Dr did not send you to a class for controling diabetes. Mine just sent me to one becuse my blood sugers were up to 250 milt.
not the important questions: are you still on inslen and what are your A1c's how much did the drop and how long did it take to get them down.

I think your story is an example of the problem with the american dite. at one time most of us lived a life style that burned thoe cacalories, now we don't and keep the same hi curestoal carb dite that our great grand parents had, but I think that most people woud do better with moderit exercise and a balanced dite.

I started my fitness for life program a few months ago, and the benefits include sleeping better, better mood, more energy, more focused, looking polished in my clothes and getting more compliments.

Changing my mindset from fad dieting to accepting it is a lifestyle has finally resonated with me to stick to the plan.

e.
Of course I went to diabetic training classes and a nutritionist...any doctor worth her beans would make sure her patient was educated about her disease.

I was on insulin for 6 years following oral hypo glycemics and metformin. Eventually the oral drugs stopped helping. My poor pancreas was pooped out and I couldn't pump any on board insulin out. Thus the change to sliding scale insulin.

I haven't been on insulin since I lost 30 lbs-one day I tested my blood glucose after eating, to decide how much insulin to take and it was 119. So I didn't take any. that night about 4 hours after eating my BG was 102 so I didn't take any insulin that night and I kept track of my blood level readings. The next morning I woke up to an 87 and had a healthy breakfast of oatmeal, half a banana and 1/2 c soy mild and raisins..at 90 minutes my BG was 127...perfectly normal,

I still test several times a week but seldom get A1c tests any more. I tend, now, to be hypo and have to keep a sugar candy at my bedside..I know my pancreas was fried and won't be surprised if I need to go back on insulin some day but for now-no diabetes, minimal hypertension..I take a 20 mg ACE medication and also a thyroid medication. Just 3 meds. 15 years ago I was taking 5 hypertension pills, insulin, a huge dose of thyroid med and antidepressants. My prescription costs were about $200 a month. Now they are under $20.
