I am currently scheduled to have my tonsils removed on January 12th and I am wondering if anyone who has gone through an adult tonsillectomy has an tips they can offer for an easier recovery. Apparently it takes adults twice as long as it takes children to recover (10 days as opposed to 5).

Any [legitimate] tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm just going to warn you... I had this done two years ago and IT SUCKS! Obviously you have to have it done... but.... I believe in honesty. TAKE THE PAIN MEDS! Schedual them. Don't wait too long because by the time you really need them, it will be far too long and you'll really be in pain. You have to keep hydrated somehow. So, if you schedual your pain meds right, then drink something like 30 minutes or so after you take them. You're not going to want to eat. Ice cream, jello, popcicles... all that is soothing if you can swallow them. I almost had to go back into the hospital for IV hydration because I couldn't swallow my spit. You'll be fine as long as you honestly are not scared to take the meds. Good luck and if you need anything or have questions feel free to email me. Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Katie. I'm pretty nervous about the pain but I'm definitely not afraid to take the meds. I have a severe aversion to pain. I'll take your tips and keep you updated.

Had it done as a child ... yes, take the meds before the pain really kicks in; once it starts it's harder to control.

I remember them telling me I would get ice cream after, and then I couldn't swallow anything, and felt very P.O.'d that they lied to me like that ...! However I will say this was not in the Top 10 pain experiences of my life. Maybe the Top 20. It's bad, but it won't kill you.

Fortunately it passes! Good luck!

Lol. Thanks. I'm glad it won't be Top 10. Although I don't yet have 10 truly painful experiences to draw from. Uh ohhhh.
