I have been in and out of depression so many times for the past 4 months. I don't know what to do. I can't afford to see my therapist since I lost my insurance nor can I get the meds I need. I've gained and lost 15 pounds, depressed about everything especially being single. I work at toys r us as a cashier and I see all the young couples there and I get depressed. I try so hard to just focus on the work but sometimes it isn't enough. I've lost so many friends cause of this and also been criticized for being a wimp, which is why I'm a little nervous about putting this here. I just don't know what to do.

You can get the meds free or cheap through most of the major companies who manufacture them. They all appear to have programs (I am guessing you are in the USA) which if you are low income you may qualify for.

Google whatever drug you are taking, find out the manufacturer and check their website.

Any public mental health clinics in your area? You might be able to get into one of those, again the low income/no insurance thing.

Ask your therapist if they know of any assistance you may qualify for, you never know. Sometimes they will let you pay in installments, and you don't know until you ask.

It probably is not really fun to be you right now, but you are the only person who can do something about this really.

Try not to dwell, try positive thnking, that's a start, even if it does not work for you at least you are being proactive which sometimes can help.

Good luck with this.

Do you exercise regularly? That can help a great deal with depression.

If you have a local health food store that sells supplements they may be able to help you with something homeopathic. Maybe St Johns Wort? I would also Google for some homeopathic remedies.

L-Lysiene can help too.

Oh and your thinking can help a lot. Try to think of things that you are grateful for while you are exercising. Combining the physical and mental can make a big difference

I have experienced clinical depression for most of my adult life and if I had to say what has really help me in my darker moments is to remember, truly remember that my my state of mind at the moment was only temporary. The fact that I convinced myself that "tomorrow" might be a little less painful help me tons. I truly wanted to succeed over that illness because of the pain that was causing my family. I'm now on medication and happy to say everything is under control. I hope this helps.

Life will present us with challenges and difficult times. That is how life is. The question is, what are you going to do about it?

I think there are many better options than drugs. They are expensive, hard to get off of and can change your personality for the worse AND leave you disconnected from yourself.

I would suggest a vigorous exercise program, yoga, volunteering, healthy whole foods (no junk food), herbal anti-depressants, COGNITIVE therapy (study up on this!), New Thought, hypnotherapy (you can do this yourself), breathing, meditation...(you can add more). Oh, EFT is shown to be very effective for moods.

Look at this time as an opportunity to grow, to focus on your dreams.

I suggest you take fish oils. I've been coming across more and more research that shows that they can be as effective or more so than many anti-depressants. A quote from the following article

http://www.thatsfit.ca/2009/11/06/3-...e-you-happier/

"On the other hand, boost intake of DHA by including more DHA-rich foods or by taking supplements, and serotonin levels rise and mood improves. Studies show up to a 50% reduction in depression in people who are the toughest to treat and even an improvement in well-being for those battling every-day blues. The evidence is so overwhelming that the American Psychiatric Association in 2006 recommended omega-3s be included in any treatment for depression"

You can find some more info on food and mood here:

http://www.thatsfit.ca/2009/11/06/ho...ost-your-mood/

Also, if you are not taking a vitamin B complex, you should do so, as well as vitamin D. Vitamin D would be particularly relevant if your depression tends to be worse in winter. Most North Amricans are deficient in vitamin D - and it not only affects neurotransmitters involved in depression and seasonal affective disorder, but also boosts your immune system, protects against a variety of cancers, and reduces many aches and pains.

None of these are expensive.

You might also consider magnesium supplements, especially if you are eating a lot of processed food and drinking caffeine, alcohol, or soda. Here's some info on that

Depression Treatment: A Cure for Depression using Magnesium?

I also second the suggestions about exercise, healthy eating, meditation, and positive thinking/doing things that bring some joy into your life.
