Went to a theme park\water park with my Sis and nephew yesterday. We set up camp at the wave pool and no I wasn't looking to "meet" someone but thought if someone lays down beside me and there is some chemistry...what the heck. I haven't been poolside like that in years and boy was I in for a shock!

Probably 80% of the women wore bathing suits UNDER shorts and a tee shirt! That look is so unattractive. I'd say most of those women were just plain ole fat and the others I guess felt the pressure of magazines filled with pictures of slender, airbrushed women.

Yes, there were men there who...OMG should have worn a tee shirt but men being men think their beer belly is sexy or their pile of money makes up for their physique...and for some women it does.

Oh lots of kids were fat too!! Yes I live in Fat Antonio...ah San Antonio but I'm sure there were lots of people there yesterday from out of town.

Maybe it's true about the economic factor. After we left the theme park we went poolside at the exclusive resort they were staying at. A majority of women\men there looked hot and not one woman had on shorts and a tee shirt over their bathing suit.

Come on America...get healthy!! I promise your dating life will improve.

I recently went to Six Flags water park in Arlington, and we wore t-shirts & shorts over our swimsuits. Why? Because when you're plummeting 90 miles an hour down a waterslide, you don't need your bikini top (or worse, bottom!) to slide off on the way down. My sister, who runs 7 miles a day and has the fittest body ever, did this. As did my niece, who doesn't even weigh 100 lbs.

Having said that, I completely agree with you: there were so many overweight people there.

I just read that Disneyworld had to re-do the boats in the "It's a Small World" ride because the average passenger has gotten so heavy, the boats weren't holding up. Scary.

The obesity epidemic is getting ridiculous in Oklahoma City. Obese people can get a handicapped parking tag because their ankles can't support their weight. And there's this whole "big is beautiful" attitude that says there's nothing wrong with being unhealthy and insists that the opposite sex be attracted to them the way they are.

At my previous job, one heavy set woman said they needed to put sturdier seats on the toilets in the ladies' room because "us big girls" could break the less sturdy ones. It never occurred to her that her trying to lose weight might be a better solution.

ZisaGirl, I understand women wearing something over their bikini bottoms on slides and the like but just hanging out at the wave pool...relaxing? I asked my Sis a bit ago why the more attractive women (very very few) wore shorts and a tee shirt over their bikini and she said some probably were not there to be flirted with or there to enjoy the admiring looks of guys because they had a kid or two to keep up with...make sense I guess.

Don't you think eating nourishing food that gives you energy rather than empty calories that leave you feeling dull and lethargic would make people a lot merrier?

There are really two different aspects of this discussion on these boards, and most of the time they get mixed in together. The first issue is dealing with the facts surrounding Americans getting bigger and the health implications surrounding it. As the healthcare reform debate is raging it is becoming increasingly obvious to those on both sides of the different solutions that the one thing you've got to get a hold of is the massive strain preventable diseases are putting on the system. I put up a link in one thread to an article regarding the supermarket chain Safeway, and how they gave incentives to employees to reduce their risk factors (weight level, cholesterol, smoking, etc.) by giving them reductions in their insurance costs. They were actually able to bring costs down, and their workers are now in better health. The workers get the benefit of a healthier life, and the company gets the benefit of less insurance costs.

I've also shared statistics about how the average woman's size bought in 1980 was a size 8, and today it is a size 14. I also gave the statistics on the increase in daily caloirc intake of the same time-period. There's also a lot of other supporting statistics that Americans as a whole weigh more, exercise, less, and are overall much less healthy. Type 2 Diabetes among children has soared to an almost epidemic level, and the overwhelming majority of those cases is due to childhood obesity. When I'm around my children's high school it is amazing how much bigger (not in a good way) high school students are today versus when I was in high school (80's).

I agree that what is really sad is that instead of dealing with these trends in a positive way there has instead been a massive PR campaign to try to get us to accept that bigger is beautiful. I sincerely believe as we see more and more health complications as well as other problems due to obesity that we'll see the pendulum swing in the other direction, and we'll start to see obesity treated more like smoking instead of it being celebrated.

In terms of the facts and statistics you really can't argue that. As I said no matter what side of the healthcare reform debate someone is one they uniformly agree that the growing obesity rate has to be addressed for the sake of personal health as well as the strains it is putting on the health care industry. But what you run into when discussing weight on these boards is that people get really really (and oh did I say really ) defensive about their weight.

The one thing that you might could get a majority agreement on is the definition of overweight and the definition of obesity. Overweight would be someone who is outside (over) their ideal range but not medically obese. Obese is being a certain percentage over that overweight range. I'm not sure how much overweight you have to be in order to be classified as obese, but I think for a lot it works out to be around more than 30 pounds overweight. I do think it would come as quite a shocker to some if they found out that they were actually in that obese range and not just overweight.

Maybe some good threads in a section like this dedicated to health and wellness can be of help to those who are looking to get more healthy and lose some weight.

Guess I just woke up a couple of weeks ago at age 51. Never was an issue to stay in decent shape but the pounds crept up on me. Not obese but not the Olympic swimmer body style anymore. Went to the doc and being monitored twice a month he put me on a appetite suppressant. It works great and now I eat fruit, veggies, smaller portions and I've lost 9 pounds in 14 days. I see those restaurant commercials now and the plates of food....those servings must be 1,500 calories or more!!

Seeing all those heavy people yesterday put me over the edge and I signed up at an awesome gym with an excellent and beautiful personal trainer...can't wait til 10AM tomorrow. The tests she did today showed my "body age" was 62 among other issues!!

waypoint_finder, not sure what I said to give you the impression I was perfect but I know some people do have the attitude you were admonishing.

The prejudicial rantings I have just read has schocked me greatly. Now I may be a bit over weight, but I am not obese. I am very aware and selfconscious about it but there are issues that someone sitting on a bench watching and judging people walk by have no clue of. To this I say shame on you for being so judgemental, immature and narrow minded.

Now I am ill and take many medications that I have been put on that play havoc with my metabolism by slowing it down resulting in gaining weight and making it harder to lose weight. In addition, due to my illness the abundant energy that I once had is long gone and prevents me from doing a workout that I would like to do and limits me physically. These are not exuses, just facts.

Now I know that there are many cases like mine and a majority of just plain laziness and bad eating habits. But your vain statements and cold harsh words strike like a knife to the heart. It's as if you are looking down your noses at me as like you are better then I. To me you are uncompassionate and narrow minded sitting on a pedistool judging other people with out having all the facts. I pray for humility and enlightenment for you. My self-esteem is high and I am looking right back at you eye to eye you do not belittle me. You need to learn some manners and I am standing up for all that are fat or whatever.

A quote, no doubt, from a food junkie, in denial. This thread and these posts aren't a proclamation that we're not enjoying life, it's a cry to our fellow Americans to wake up and shed the pounds, reduce our national debt and in general, get their act together!.
There's a huge number of the overweight and obese people that are causing our insurance rates to rise along with our taxes ( for those who need all the extra attention and suffer so many poor diet/poor exercise regimen-related diseases) See this simple graphic if you don't think we're in deep trouble...
