I took a class recently and it was pretty fun, I have to say. There were even a couple of guys in the class. I might start going regularly.

Has anyone else tried this?

Glad you picked this up...it is fun and so good for you. Not only are you toning yourself but you can get a good cardio workout as well. The arm movements alone can be challenging as you are doing small precise movements and have to keep them suspended for so long at times.
Bellydance: Fitness for beginners with Veena & Neena by Natural Journeys is a nice start for those challenged like me. Just because "sisters" dress modest doesn't mean we can just let go of ourselves but they also have more advanced DVD's as well.
There is a place in town called Mina & Dimi's Greek House which features belly dancing during the evening. Well this is before I converted, but I took my mom there when we first came to San Antonio and had a blast. The dancing was very tastefully done. The dancer was a really sweet person and we got to talking to her after the show. She told us what album she was dancing to:
"Ya Salam Ya Fahtiem" and you can get it for a great deal @ Hollywood Music Center. They also have other belly dancing material on the site as well. I haven't purchased any of it so I can't give a review.
I have to agree that the male dancers are great too. A relative of mine had one do a wonderful dance with swords for her birthday as a gift from her daughter. I appreciate the DVD's because I could never be in a mixed class myself but I hope you enjoy yourself enough for me

I think more women should do this.

For cardio purposes. Really.

LOL Mr. Right!

Thanks PR_Princess for posting all that cool info.

I went to my 2nd class and loved it even more. I'm even ordering a jangly hip scarf to wear during class.

I was very sore after both the classes I took so definitely getting some core muscle workouts, while having too much fun!

And it's an awesome cardio workout, we are essentially constantly moving for an hour, I was sweating like crazy.

There's a show on FitTV that's a half hour on belly dancing, and if you're ever in EPCOT there's a section in the Morocco nation section that sells a great variety of B.D. costumes! (and they have a GREAT belly dancer in the restaurant, along with some great Middle-eastern food!)

Yes, I have seen that show, it's called "Shimmy". It's GREAT.
Sometimes on my "gym weekend" (the two days of the week I don't go the gym) I'll watch that show and get up and do a little bellydancing. It's so much fun!
