If you aren't having fun while losing weight, then I suggest you get on a program that you like. After all, the more you are rewarded, the more you are motivated to continue. Here's a few primers on losing weight and/or getting into shape:

1) Don't diet-instead decide to make & have a life changing lifestyle. The difference is in having a positive outlook, less pressure and & better long term results. You don't "diet" everyday. You just decide to have a healthy lifestyle that includes a better diet, exercise, sleep and learning to have healthy emotions.

2) Reward yourself! It's ok to go off your "diet" and reward yourself. Life is short; taste the ice cream.

3) Calories=a healthy diet. Make this simple especially if you are a beginner. More fruit, vegetables, fish, chicken, whole grains and stomach filling low calorie, low fat night snacks.

4) Exercise! Start at 3 or 5 minutes a day or 3-5 xs a week. Forget the "if no pain then no gain" slogan. Especially if you are a beginner, out of shape and/or overweight. Save your limbs especially if you are older
and don't push yourself too early or that could result in injuries.

5) Include aerobics. Walking is an easy, low cost and good on the knees.

6) Have fun! Take a day off, go sightseeing or do seomething to take your mind off your diet. Including exercise like walking [think zoo] helps.

7) Watch the hidden calories in food, especially while eating out. Have food with sauces on the side, etc. Watch hidden salt & fats in food.

8) Change your exercise! Our bodies adapt either monthly or in a few months to the exercise we do. Sometimes I'll change in a month-other times I'll change my exercises either weekly or daily. Do something different; stress different muscles. But remember this is for more advanced students. Always be gentle with your body to avoid injuries.

9) Warm up.

10) Lift weights. Even light weights help burn off calories. Be aware-in the beginning, when building muscle, you might GAIN some weight. Muscle weighs more than fat. In the long term however, more muscle means you burn calories quicker and more efficiently. Please it's healthier.

11) Do exercises that you like. If you don't like one program, seek out another program you like. If you don't like walking, take up bike riding or swimming.

12) Think small accomplishments. If this is a lifestyle change, that means eating too much ONE day won't ruin your whole life/diet.

13) Have goals.

14) Throw away the weight scale. You don't have to weigh yourself everyday if it's only punishment. Think positive...if daily weighing yourself works, then use it. If not, then do it less.

15)Get a healthy amount of sleep. Sleep deprived people gain weight easier per a hormonal reaction.

16) Get a work out or walking buddy.

17) Educate yourself more on diets, exercise and having a healthy lifestyle. Avoid negative people who indulge in sabotaging their bodies.

18) Avoid injuries. Stretch after your workout.

19) Learn how to have healthy emotions. Whether you suffer from depression, being shy and not sticking up for yourself, educate yourself per having healthy emotions [then later regretting it and eating too much, etc.]

20) Step back and see what's working. And what's not.
Occasionally change and tweak your programs.

Good luck!

Holy low caloried cashew nuts...not a single comment

No problemo. Another tip, if you get injured while working out, use the RICE treatment.

Rest
Ice
Compress the ice to wound
Elevation-elevate the wounded part above your heart.

Tip-dumbells are great to use for beginners and women. You can use different weights, do a full workout, increase your weight and or reps and increase your health while losing weight.

Tip-invest in Billy Blanks "Tae Bo" to have fun while losing weight. An ingenius system, Billy Blanks {7 time World Martial Arts Champion} does it right. He makes for a great host.

Using aerobics, martial arts, dancing and his resistance bands {great for those who are out of shape-I used em years ago while getting ready to lift weights & join a full contact gym. I lost 60lbs integrating his system into mine, dieting, walking, shadowboxing and lifting weights.}

Tip-drink herbal tea and or more liquids. Your stomach fills up & it's lower calories than other stuff.

Tip-for the best gatorade, mix juice with water. Basically it's the same thing at a much cheaper price. You can dilute juice to any desired strength.

Summer time dilutions could be 10% juice and 90% water. Or up to 50-50 if you aren't budget conscious. Plus if you use 100% juice, it's superior to gatorades sugar.

Great ideas, Outlaw! I do many of them already, and will try out some of the others (I'd to be able to sleep more hours ).

I also think it's important not to be discouraged if the pounds don't come off quickly. It could be your body rearranging itself, like the extra muscle being built up. You need to use other measures to gauge your progress, like your waist measurement, how your clothes fit, how much faster you are running, how much more energy you think you have.

Give yourself positive strokes for the efforts you've put in, and don't beat yourself up just because you're off the diet/ fitness wagon for a period of time. Reward yourself (non-food) when you've achieved a fitness/ diet goal.

It's a change in lifestyle that needs to last the rest of your life. Do what works for you, and enjoy the journey!

I'm game to get back on the wagon...here are my suggestions for fun ways to lose weight:
DVD's:
1. Bellydance: Fitness for Beginners
Slim down with Veena & Neena
(Natural Journeys)
2. Yoga: Conditioning for weight loss with
Suzanne Deason
(Gaiam)
______________________________
As far as herbal tea suggestions:
1. Anise
2. Mint
3. Chammomile
4. Fennel
When you are trying to portion control these will help when your tummy fills up with gas

Thanks Shelby. That's true what you say about using other measurements. It's so easy to get frustrated and give up. My weight lifting has made me feel great and I look better. The pounds though haven't come off as easily as I thought. I want to lose 20lbs by mid August and lately I haven't had much time for areobics. But the weight lifting and changing my diet [when I don't cheat]
has made a difference.

I need to cut down on my sodium-cut out certain items
that are easy to prepare for meals. If it's not sugar then it's sodium, if it's not sodium, then it's fat...and so on and so on!

How about you? Are you trying to lose weight?

Great post and lots of info. Somehow I think skipping the belly dancing will be good. It would gross out the ATF agents who are watching me Yoga's great and a Gujarati friend of mine owns a business a block down from where I live. He showed me a few times years ago, both demonstrating [his business is slow in the mornings] and showing me thru his book on Indian Yoga.

I've forgotten most of what he taught me and I love it. I just bought licorice and forget to pick up chamomile. Also I bought Cranberry Weightless by Traditional Medicinals [fennel, Uva ursi, cranberry + other.] Mint-I always have mint year round as that's my favorite herb.

Actually I forgot to add that I usually put Fenugreek seeds inside with the Chammomile which aids digestion but not too much as it can be quite bitter. Licorice is one I haven't bought yet but I see from my herb book it is good for other issues as well...it is present in my herb concoction for the lungs which is the only reason I am able to function in this climate (allergens 24/7)

I've started using Cool Cayenne supplements also (circulation, digestion, cholesterol) The cool part are other herbs that protect the stomach. It has more vit. C than an orange! It really helps with circulation and makes you sweat. This is a good thing to kick start a sluggish metabolism barring there are no contraindications for your health.

Yes I don't advertise that I use Veena and Neena @ work either..lol. I have a hard enough time building up some street cred among the guys. I enjoy yoga because it really gives a sense of being centered. I shelved them for so long but dusted it off because I have to work off my candy machine habit in a bad way. Have fun with Tae Bo.

I have been a diabetic for about 4 years. When I first found out, I lost 70 pounds in a year. It felt so great and I kept it off for two years. Then I fell and hurt my shoulder and ended up having surgery. I was not allowed to walk outside as an exercise or on a treadmill for fear I would fall. Of course, I then got lazy with the exercise and the diet and I can't seem to get back on track. I have not gained all the weight back that I lost, but I have gained far more than I should have. I know longer have the energy that I had before nor am I happy with the way I look. I have let myself get discouraged and can't seem to get out of the rut. I'm sure there is someone out there who can relate to my problem. Please talk to me.
