OK, what are the rules on this?

I've been modded twice, and have been trying to figure out the pattern. I wasn't cussin' or blaspheming or saying anything explicit .

I think the first time it may have been for -- uh, how to get this past the censors -- w u s s y -- and the other time for g o b b l e d e g o o k

So, what gives -- unfamiliar words? Particularly from Anglo Saxon roots?

The way I understand it is there is definitely a list, and each post goes through and checks if there is a certain string that matches. If it does, you get modded.

It's clunky and inelegant, but short of having someone approve every post, or implementing some sort of Bayesian filter, which would be very hard, I think that's probably the best they can do if they don't want me filling up the boards with cussin'.

i think i approved a post of yours in LTAS, but i forget what word it was for.

also, if you quote a post that has already been approved after being modded initially it will send it all back to moderation.

It would be nice if the list was public--at least the less-obvious words. But that's wishful thinking.

About every fifth text from me, to answer your question. If I ever figure out what I'm doing that triggers it, I'll share

The moderation software is a program which checks each post for certain combinations of letters and symbols, and will reject an entire post if it contains one of the proscribed strings, as I understand it.

It is not perfect, on this we can all agree. But it has only the bias that has been programmed into it, and from what I can tell, that is fairly broad spectrum and doesn't play favorites. Links will also sometimes trip the filter- we don't want to be drowning in potted-meat-junk do we? And it is *much* better than having no filter at all, in my personal opinion.

Occasionally, an innocuous phrase will get caught. This has become less common than it used to be, I believe. Given the vast flexibility of the language and this text-based interface, though, the software would need to be robust and have a fairly large library.

For rather obvious reasons we cannot and will not be disclosing exactly what words and phrases will cause a post to go into mod-land. Each post that does get caught, however, is viewed by a real person to see whether or not it is a real violation. That real person (or persons) is/are very busy at times, as you can tell.

I would check back and see if the post has been released, after a while, and give it time for it to be checked. It can be annoying when it occurs, but it happens to all of us- even VCL's. The moderation software is an aspect of eHarmony Advice I don't see being removed at any time in the future, so we just keep posting normally and deal with this as it happens. *grin*

I disagree on this point. I don't think the reasons for not disclosing it are all that obvious. Certainly there are obvious strings, but if the less obvious ones were included in the community standards, it would probably be a good idea and save the moderators a lot of work while still keeping the boards clean.

After all, how many spammers are going to read the community standards, anyway.

the issue with releasing the dirty words is that people will then know what words trip the filter and try to get around them. like...

b()()bs. (sorry, just clarifiying)

then it would make more work for the mods because they then would have to wait for the post to be reported before deleting or editing it.

what would make things more betterer is if they gave us a way to edit a post that is in moderation, because it can sometimes take days for a post to show up. >_>

That second word looks like it was modded for the last four letters (which could've been a derogatory term for Asians) not just because it was "odd" or "unfamiliar."

Er, and the first word? I'm not sure what precisely you're alluding to, as "w u s y" obviously isn't a word, but if you meant "w u s s y," I'm surprised, as I'm pretty sure I've used it without being modded. (And if you really meant a different word that begins with a letter further up the alphabet, well, it's obvious why that was modded!)

Just a warning, I've found that I was also modded before for the word submi$$ive, even though it's a perfectly innocent English word, as apparently the filters don't want us, gasp!, possibly discussing dev*iant sex practices. (Not sure if that d-word right there would be modded or not, btw...it is annoying trying to not get swept up by a filter when you know you're not saying anything bad.)
