How are those determined? Who determines them? I started a thread about bitterness and it seems to be a hotbed of controversy and now I am quite interested in what is considered a personal attack.

Personal attacks, and any Violation Reports come to me. I'll read the reported post, and then read up or down in the thread as needed to make a determination.

A LOT of the reports I get are more differences in opinion, or someone taking offense at an idea, than an actual personal attack or other Standards Violation.

In confirming that something is a personal attack, I rely on the widely accepted definition in journalism:

"an attack that is made upon the honesty, character, integrity or like personal qualities of an identified person or group"

Basically if it's clear that the poster was trying to impart personal injury to the person to whom their post is directed, I will take action.

When I'm unsure about something I'll secure a "sanity check" from my boss (who, as a male, offers the opposing gender perspective which is also very handy!).

Sometimes the line between a personal attack and a difference of opinion is razor thin, particularly among the "straight shooter" posters who have a more direct posting style.

I hope this answers your question - if not, ask more and I'll answer more

The sport reference is that it is a fowl (sp?) to go after the player (poster) but fair game to go after the ball (idea/thought).

I look at a personal attack as a comment which is aimed to make the recipient look bad. I mostly find that these have 'you' in them.

I will sometimes also consider a personal attack where the following disclaimers were attached.

'Just calling it like it is' or 'no offense' ... words to that effect. If what I am writing isn't a personal attack, then why the need to add those words? If what I am writing could be construed as a personal attack, perhaps I need to look at my publishing style, tone, choice of words?

Like Lori - I do find it sometimes borderline to determine if it is a personal attack or just someone popping his/her opinion out there in a prickly manner.

And if I am in doubt, I refer the to Fount of Personal Attack Wisdom: AKA Lori.
