I still want to know whether I should extend random acts of kindness to the complete a$$ who lives next door to me?
I have partly turned at least two jerks into nicer people by doing that. I told someone that was giving me a hard time (for no good reason I knew of) that I was wondering if it was something I said or did that caused this to happen because I want to be accountable for my part in all this.

He was quite amazed that someone would attempt to reach out to him like that and his attitude toward me changed dramatically.

I don't think there's many people on this earth, even celebrities who find the limelight, that don't feel underappreciated and would remember someone trying to fully appreciate them as perhaps one of the highlights of their life.

Yeah, I generally agree...the best way to disarm someone's hostility is to come at them with friendliness and a true attempt to hear them.

I think random means to do as things arise - not to do without purpose. You can be purposeful in your acts of kindness and in your lifestyle of kindness, but that doesn't make an individual act any less random or spontaneous. I'm going to be contrarian here and say that I like the random designator. In connotes a certain spirit of living in the moment that I like.
