Is a question really a question or is it validation of an answer?

Many responses to posts go something like ...if you have to ask the question you already know the answer.

Do you think that asking a question is not really looking for that answer, but the validation that your answer is correct?

I can see that in this question, actually.

Sometimes, I think it may be a little of both. Sometimes, I think there are questions posted here that the person posing the question is absolutely clueless of what the next step should be. They ise the aswers to help tease apart the complicating issues to come up with a decision.

Other times, I think the asker just needs a place to vent some and have others give the nod of what is already on their mind. Or it could be that hte asker has a low self-confidence and didn't trust his/her initial thoughts about the issue.

There's also a third reason that not mentioned. Some questions I feel are posted just to stir the pot and get people talking (not always in a good way). Some posts are made to be able to spit out hate while others are made up so the poster can get a good chuckle out of the people responding.

I think most, though, are probably for validation.
