Last year I had digital cable tv and my average bill was $145.00 per month. That included high speed internet and no phone service. (I use cell phone service exclusively.)

I reduced that to basic cable and snail speed internet and now my monthly bill is $55.00 per month. My parents paid $0.00 per month for TV service when I was a child.

In the beginning cable companies promised virtually advertisement free TV for a monthly fee. Premium movie channels would cost extra. We now pay all this money for what? Channels that provide us with hour long advertisements? Shows so silly that children won't even watch them?

Something old same as the new: If I get a digital converter box for a one time cost of $40.00; add a decent antennae - cost, $25.00 and not only do I get more channels for free than I get with basic cable; but, I also get the channel guide that I used to get when I was paying out all that cash for FREE!

Now many people got the converter free and what I didn't know was that every family was allowed 2 of them regardless of income... I thought you had to be in a low income bracket or something... Now I really feel dumb! Was I not listening when this was all over the news? Or did they fail to get that across somehow?

Anyway, cable's days are numbered at my house...

Sorry cable, you didn't keep your promise and now - for me - you are history. Free TV, I'm back!

Incidently, I'm not alone... Network TV's ratings have been going up due to an increased audience.

…and possibly better programming (than recent years). I’m loving the Fox line up this year, House, Bones, Glee Club, Fringe.

Drop your TV service completely and stream your favorite series from NetFlix.

I don't want to sound like an advertisement for the company, but we are power NetFlix users. The company isn't making a dime on us because we watch and return nearly 20 dvds a month. Plus the streaming.

We don't have anything hooked up to the TV besides a PS3, that takes care of everything, including surf the web! (The XBox 360 does the same thing.)

Wow... are you the geek of the family or did one of your kids hook all of that up?

I have a pretty old computer and snail speed internet... I doubt that I could stream well...

You got have fast, fast Internet. We have so many wifi devices accessing our Internet signal, I worry the cable company will charge us a corporate rate! The teenagers have lead me into the promised land of wifi, streaming, hand helds, and texting from all kinds of devices. It's a wonderful but scary place.
