Asperger's syndrome is defined by high IQ and verbal skills combined with poor social skills and limited empathy for others. Is this not every engineer you have ever known? Why isn't Engineerr's Syndrome just a high functioning form of Asperger's? Defend yourself, all you engineers out there!

Funny thing is that ADHD (which I have) has been linked to both Asperger's and Autism. So I've got the IQ and verbal skills, my social skills are a bit sketchy (no social filter, the words just come flying out) but I've got probably too much empathy. My son, who also has it, is the same way.

I'm curious what the engineers have to say.

I never heard of Asperger's until several months ago when someone here (in another group) started posting about it. And I don't have time for a bunch of psycho-babble so I'm not going to see a shrink to see if I have it.

One of my best friends, half-kidding, says I'm anal-retentive but he doesn't know what the true definition of that is. Besides, I've been called worse in my life and I don't care.

As far as the symptoms Comedian listed, I'm not an idiot but I'm probably not a Mensa either. Half the people who I know who claim to be Mensas seem like idiots. From what I've read on these boards, if these forum postings are any indication of communication (verbal) skills, my skills seem better than most but I wouldn't say they're high. Real engineers have a non-technical vocabulary of about 800 words. (So they say in the engineer jokes.) And as far as social skills, everyone just loves me!

So what's there to defend? I'll accept being a high functioning person, and if you want to call it Engineer's Syndrome, eh...like I said, what's to defend?

Let me just get this straight here... are we making fun of people with Aspurger's? More importantly, did you see the last episode of Boston Legal where Captain Kirk shot the bad guy?

I think Comedian is making fun of engineers. Maybe she's putting together some new material for her stand-up routine.

No, I am not making fun of engineers. Well only a little! I've been married to 2 engineers and dated lots more. They are kind of my specialty! So, I love their nerdy, self-conscious ways. I only read about Aspergers recently and thought I recognized some of my former boyfriends!

Well engineers certainly can provide your kitten mittens with the lifestyle that they are accustomed to....

This does speak to society's desire to categorize abnormalities as diseases for the sake of PR (money).
