Snap shots in time... Truth, Justice, and the American Way.

I was watching Superman today and it struck me how unified this country can actually be. Sure, the fifties were torn by communist scare tactics, etc., but Americans had an identity. We knew what we stood for.

Even though America seems to be more divided than ever I wouldn't trade the problems of today for those of yesterday... America's children no longer have to practice roll, duck, and cover (under the desk.) Why did anyone think that this would protect anyone from a nuclear bomb attack?

The way the cold war ended only goes to prove that wars don't have to be fought on the battle field.

Another snapshot from the past I saw today was from a commercial for the British show, "Monty Python." It's on Monday nights at 8:00... I have an extra TV so I think that if I set it right next to my other one I can watch it and "Family Guy" at the same time.

Ours was not to reason why, ours was to bend over and kiss it good-bye.

Have you ever seen the short "Duck and Cover"? They showed it to us at least once a year when I was in grade school, and a couple of times in high school during the Cuban Missle Crisis to prepare us in case the balloon went up and the big one came down.

When I was an undergraduate I worked as a teaching assistant for an interdisciplinary program. The American Lit prof liked to use movies as part of his class. We got a hold of "Duck and Cover" and synchronized it to "Be Careful with that Ax, Eugene" It's been a long time, I think it was done by Pink Floyd. It was a blast watching it a weekend party once you were in the right state of mind.

Actually, I have a hard time understanding Pink Floyd in a "right state of mind." I watched "The Wall" over twenty years ago in an "altered state of consciousness," and I thought it was the greatest thing. However, I recently watched it stone sober, and I had a hard time following it.

I have a CNN produced tape series on the Cold War, and it is interesting to follow the history, from the time we were allies with the Soviets in fighting the Nazis up to the collapse of the Berlin Wall. And, it is of particular interest to see how each side exploited the "Cold War" for its own gain. Primarily, we exploited the "threat" to build up our military industrial complex. However, the Soviets manipulated the post WW2 collapse of colonization by the western powers, and the third world drive for independence to further their own interests.

However, it is interesting to see in hindsight that "worldwide communism" was not the threatening organized monolith that was once believed. The Chinese had a falling out with the Soviet Union, and Vietnam had territorial disputes with their powerful neighbor to the north, etc.

I recently read and found of interest that the primary reason countries of eastern Europe resented being under Soviet domination was due to the fact that they considered themselves as part of western civilization, or basically European civilization, and they resented being under the influence of "The East," or Asia. In other words, it was more of an issue of xenophobia rather than ideology.

After all, it was Hitler's "crusade" against the feared and "subhuman" Slavic peoples of the East that resulted in the collapse of Nazi Germany and the shaping of post WW2 Cold War world. We were once allies with the Soviets, but now there was an uneasy peace, and our own xenophobia over the feared "East." And, the Soviets also feared another invasion from "The West." Thus, the "buffer zone" of satellite states in Eastern Europe. And now this tension with the "East" seems to be a replay of the clash between western civilization and the Islamic world. Therefore, perhaps it best to downplay our image as "Christian crusaders" in our dealings with the new, and old, "East."

Rix, I think those days of Christian crusaders are long gone in our minds, (my mind anyway) but seem to want to live on forever in the minds of enough Islamofascists that it's going to be quite a long time before we see an end to it. Beyond your and my lifetime.

It's an ideology that's going to take at least a generation to start making a difference, and longer to fade out. It's an ideology that's so extreme that I doubt it will ever fade out completely. And it's an ideology that wants to use nuclear weapons on us.

So, maybe it's not such a bad idea to know how to duck and cover.

The rhetoric of the previous administration invoking imagery of a divinely sanctioned crusade added fuel to such paranoia. I received an email from a far more right-wing "acquaintance," who was bemoaning the fact that the Obama Administration allegedly confiscated Bibles from U.S. soldiers operating in Afghanistan. The action was protested, since U.S. soldiers have allegedly distributed Bibles since fighting the Japanese in the far eastern theatre in WW2.

However, we are fighting an enemy that already perceives us as "Christian imperialists," and distributing Bibles in Afghanistan does not help the situation. Therefore, if the administration allegedly took this course of action, I could understand the logic. It is the vocation of missionaries to distribute religious literature, not soldiers.

Do you think it would go over any better if we sent the H00ters girls over there to distribute them? I think they'd be safe, don't you?

(Okay, I admit it - I'm really just looking for a reason to ship all of the H00ters girls out of the country)

That would definitely add an interesting dimension to missionary dating! I might even apply for the missionary position.
