I just saw it and loved it. I found it hilarious. I'm agnostic and he almost turned me into an atheist! Maher has a certain way of making people look so stupid in order to drill his points home. Loved his comparison of Jesus Christ to Santa Claus!

There is a huge comparison that can be made for sure between Santa and JC. You would think that the people who were taken in by Santa would have learned their lesson.

I like Bill Maher, generally.I saw Religulous and found it funny in parts, evocative and entertaining in parts. But it was very much an uneven movie that sounded, at times, rather shrill and lacking in compassion, which all good politcal and religious humorous commentary must have. I think this movie suffers from the same weakness that all polemical movies or books suffer from: it is hard not to start sounding a little preachy and narrow.

BTW I am pretty sure Maher is a self admitted agnostic not an atheist. But I may be wrong about this.

Parts of it were funny, but it came off as kind of mean-spirited.He hardly talked to the people I found most interesting, evidently preferring to spend more time with those he could ridicule the most.I like Bill Maher, and I had expected more from him.I wasn't offended, just disappointed.

I've heard him call himself an atheist, but this movie makes it obvious that he is agnostic. I don't agree with you about all good political and religious movies needing compassion. The purpose of this film was to point out, as the title states, the RIDICULOUS extremes people go to in their need for a belief of more than what we have right here on earth. The fact that millions of people believe they have "a personal relationship with Jesus", a supposed dead man, because they can't handle the reality of their own lives without that belief is astonishing. That exact phrase can actually be googled it is used so much. Maher wasn't preaching, just trying to make a little sense! The fact that Jesus can't possibly have a "personal relationship" with anyone or as Maher says "whisper in everyone's ear at the same time" is equivalent to there not being a Santa Claus. But these religios fanatiics cannot fathom it.

Was it along the same lines as "Dogma", or didthe filmactually have some substance?

I want to see the movie, since the subject is of great interest to me from all perspectives.

However, after seeing Maher on a late night talk show derisively referring to religious people as "Jesus freaks",I want to see the movie in such a way that he receives no support from it.

It is in no way similar to'Dogma', it is in documentary style. Maher travels the world and tries to explain his perspective that there is no God to all kinds of religious fanatics (not just Christian.) He tries to use history as well as logic to show why each religion just can't BE as the holy book was written. The subjects he interviews have a very strong faith based belief system and end up looking pretty.... well... ridiculous.

I thought it was hilarious, i LOLed every few minutes. Bill Mahers use of blunt questions, redicule, and humor was very effective at exposing the absurdities of religious belief.
