For my 30th I did nothing. Had just moved to another country and didn't know anybody. I was heavily pregnant with my 3rd child and my ex-husband didn't do anything to celebrate the birthday.

For my 40th I did nothing. Had yet again just moved to another country and didn't know anybody. My ex-husband was working until 7pm, didn't do anything to celebrate it and both he and our children were asleep at 9pm.

For my 50th I did nothing. Our children now lived in different countries and my ex-husband had just left me for his secretary 2 weeks before.

If we are ever on the same continent, look me up. I think you're owed about three decades of birthday celebrations and I'm pretty sure I can squeeze them into one long weekend, although I can't guarantee everyone will get out alive.

I didn't really start celebrating b-days until around 35. My ex-husband always acted like it was such a chore to celebrate that it took a lot of the fun out of it for me. It was easier to pretend I didn't care than to care and be disappointed. Then, one year I decided to hell with that. I announced to everyone I knew (even slightly) that it was my birthday and I wanted to celebrate. Enough of them were game that I always had something going on.

I decided then and there I'd never put up with anyone too soul deficient to celebrate. My birthday. His birthday. A sunny day. A rainy day. Life's too damn short not to find reasons to smile and enjoy one another's company.

Not much to say about this. My 40th was 5 years ago... If I recall correctly, I didn't do anything-just went about my day. I think that if your social circle considers something to be important, than days like that are commemorated. Mostly, it's ignored.

Thanks, I'll be sure to do that.

40? Piece of cake. I'm aiming at 50 right around the corner, too.

I had dinner with friends on my birthday. That year I: changed jobs, ended a LTR, bought a(nother) house, and finished my college degree (finally).
Yay!

I have eight more years to go. Venice, eh?! That sounds fantastic!

Hmmm... a traditional birthday dinner (what I normally have), or a special trip? I think I'll take the trip!

I actually had a lot of fun celebrating my 40th. I was given this huge surprise party by my friends and I was so clueless. It was a garden theme because they know that's my passion and there was a dinner, games and all kinds of fun. I was thrilled.

I'm with you, LBMM. If you and Helle and I get a chance to meet together we're darn well going to celebrate three decades of birthdays with Helle. She deserves one heck of a party to make up for being ignored.
