I used to footnote everything too, but 19 on a two page paper? Never...

I also used to not even start writing the paper until 11pm the night before it was due at 5pm the next day...my grade(s)...A-!

19 footnotes on a 2 page paper = content .....the rest is "filler".

I can relate!! I used to pull fifteen-hour writing marathons and get 90s. I've pulled so many all-nighters I've practically forgotten how to sleep!

Filler - the occasional 'the', 'is', and 'because' the student included here and there in their paper? Or was the punctuation the filler?

Welcome to my world, Linds...welcome to my world. It's stuff like THAT, that has caused the major shift towards competency-based grading in our state. The Universities kept complaining (rightfully) that our High Schools would send them kids with Honors-level grades, but not demonstrable skills to apply that knowledge. Made the State change its entire method of evaluating our students.

Hopefully (If we do our jobs well), you won't have to deal with that from the one or two stray New Hampshire students who find their way to Regina.
The really depressing part is that these papers were from students in a third year class. They're nearing the end of their program!! Have they learned nothing in all their time at university? I must have written, "Consult the History Department Style Sheet or the Chicago Manual of Style for proper footnote and bibliographic format," and, "Attention to proofreading would eliminate grammatical and spelling mistakes and prevent uneven transitions," on at least two thirds of the papers. That's not good, especially when you take into consideration the fact that the class only has twenty students.

On a completely unrelated note ...

My mother and step-father received a spam/forward e-mail recently ... David Copperfield and his amazing card trick.

First they are shown a set of six court cards of differing suits. They're asked to select one of the cards and concentrate on it ... then scroll down. Then they are shown a set of five court cards, supposedly the original set minus the one they were focusing on.

This boggled and confounded them ... no matter which card they chose, it was missing. So they send it to me hoping I could reveal the mystery ...

And I'm like, you do realize the second set of cards is completely different from the first, right?
