They discovered a type 3 civilizaton. The crew was confronted by Robby the Robot, and Robot B-9. The monolith was also there, suspended in mid-atmosphere, vibrating.

The vibration shook the space craft hyper drive back on and they were able to hover over the Monolith in which they observed a very peculiar object sticking out... and then
