. . . my first thread here in CSC was about my furnace breaking down on the coldest night of the year.

Well, it's not the coldest night of the year tonight, but it's cold enough and my house is like an icebox. My toes would work quite well as ice cubes, though what I would want a cold drink for is beyond me. I turn up the heat, my roomates turn it down. One of my roomates is currently wearing sweatpants, socks, a sweater, a toque, and an afghan. Are we anti-heat around here? I, for one, would not mind paying a few extra dollars on the heating bill, rather than bundling up like Nanook of the North when I'm indoors. It's not cool to see your breath when you're in the house.

Just sayin'.

That is one of the drawbacks of having a roommate, but having a roommate can be fun too. Hope you warm up quickly.

I remember my first year of college in Edmonton and having a roommate that kept the heat up really high and ran around in shorts and bare feet in the middle of winter while the rest of us sweltered. She drove me crazy and I think I drover her crazy too. Half way through the year she moved in with someone else and the temperature returned to normal in our apartment.

When I first moved to Regina, I rented an apartment that was really an addition between the house and the garage - an unheated addition. That was one hideous winter!! It got down to about -45. I had a tiny little space heater that I would put right beside my bed and I slept in sweatpants, fuzzy socks, a t-shirt, a sweatshirt, a toque, and mitts - under about six layers of blankets. Brrr!!!!!

Ackh!!! I think I would have gone home if I had to do that inside. It was bad enough having to bundle up like outside. That winter in Edmonton was a cold one too. I think the average temp was around -40 that year? I had frozen nose hairs and eyelashes whenever I walked to school and a friend of mine, also from BC, made the stupid mistake of biking to school one morning without a touque on. He nearly lost both of his ears. You should have seen how swollen and red they were. He was in sooo much pain.

During the winter, I will set the heater around 60-62 degrees, just enough so that it kicks on a couple of times during the night. Any more than that, and I get really sick. I sleep better when it's cold anyway.

I do hope you and your roommates can compromise on the temperature, so that you aren't miserable all winter. In the meantime, here's some hot chocolate for you.

Last January, going deer hunting, I was staying for a week in the woods in Tennessee in a trailer and there was an outdoor loo. At night it was -15C (5F), you could see your own breath inside the trailer, the ice cubes in my gin glass from the evening before would still be intact in the morning. Running to the outdoor loo in the middle of the night was quite an experience. Dang, that was cold but fun. Of course it helped that the guy next to me was hot in more than one way

That's the same at my house. The temp is set at 62...64 during the deep freeze of January. It's enough for me! As for hot chocolate-whatever happened to that?! I get tired of someone giving me a packet of cocoa and telling me its hot chocolate. Hot chocolate is SO much better than cocoa.
