Fino,

I just realized the date and found your post. I then remembered being in NYC, unable to return to Seattle, on this day 8 years ago. So many memories of those four days flooding back, as I was stranded there until Friday. Fortunately, I was with friends and learned how heroic New Yorkers really are in a crisis.

Whitehorse is far better prepared to deal with a hijacked airliner than it was on Sept. 11, 2001, when city officials thought they were dealing with such an emergency, the mayor says.
"There is no question we are better prepared," Mayor Ernie Bourassa told CBC News.

Whitehorse had its own crisis to deal with on Sept. 11, 2001 when two Korean airliners were forced down by the American military.

Just hours after four hijacked airlines crashed with devastating effects in the United States, the U.S. military told Yukon authorities that it wanted to force two planes to land at the Whitehorse airport because it feared they had also been taken over by militants.

With news of the potential hijacking, many people fled the downtown area and the Alaska Highway was closed.
The South Korean 747 jumbo jet was intercepted over Alaska and escorted to the airport by U.S. and Canadian jet fighters. A cargo plane was also forced to the airport but the suspected hijackings turned out to be false alarms. Still, the planes were kept in the Yukon for a couple of days.

I wrote a prose piece about this event. I sent it a few weeks later to a lower Manhattan fire station. On New Year's Eve of the same year, I found a card in my mailbox. The firestation Tenhouse had sent me a thank you card. It was on their stationary and signed by Capt. O'Malley. I cried, it was my best gift all year. I can't believe they wrote me.

I looked and looked the following year to see if I could find anything current in print about this station. I did. Tenhouse is 300 feet from ground zero.

I found a copy of what I had written to them. I placed it with the thank you card and the magazine article written about this station's role on 9/11. This small collection is my treasure.

It just makes me sad that people have gone back to taking what we have for granted, and they don't seem to realize that it could happen all over again, any time. Our enemies are out there, they hate us, and they are plotting. We may can prevent another nightmare like 9/11, but the ones who want to hurt us will never stop trying.

How can anybody forget about this day? And that's whay I treasure everything I have right now, especially my family and loved one's well being...
