Background: I have to work in Atlanta next week, so I eschewed a plane ticket from work so I can drive and 1) visit a friend in Lafayette, 2) do my family obligation thing and visit the old folks in New Orleans, and 3) have my own car (with kayak on top) so I can vacation in North Carolina after I work in Atlanta for a week. I also have friends and family to visit in Atlanta.

I leave Dallas at 11:30 am to time my arrival in Lafayette for dinner at 6:30 pm. I'm carrying heavy technology on my person...2 cell phones...a handheld GPS...and an ipod in my pockets. They are bulging...and not in the good kind of way. In addition I have two laptops in a backpack.

The drive is uneventful, but even with my handheld GPS I had trouble finding the 'right' apartment complex of my friend. That should have been a warning the night was going to be bad. The dinner with my female friend was nice. She is just a friend, but very cute and I sure didn't mind the strong hug goodnight. So I hit the road to try to get to my parents house before midnight.

Unfortunately, I needed gas. While I'm fueling up outside, I hear my phone ring. It's on the passenger seat. I open the driver's side door and reach over to grab the phone...remember how I said my pockets were bulging? Well, in that moment my keys decided to make a break for it--and land on the drivers seat unbeknowst me. No problem, because I didn't close my door after the conversation with my dad who wanted an update on my location. And unless I hold the handle, the door won't lock anyway. But there sure were a lot of bugs, and I decided to close the door. Then I noticed my laptops in the passenger side, and realize I better lock the door before I go inside to buy some coffee for the rest of the road.

When paying for my coffee..I realize my keys are not in my pocket. A wave a nausea hits...but I know to remain calm-find the keys, and if they are in car you can always call popalock. I spot the keys, make the call and wait 40 minutes for popalock to show at 11pm. He was done in 15 seconds--Popalock only hires the best car thieves, I assure you.
Now this part is very important...I paid him with CASH from my wallet. I had to sign the receipt, so I needed two hands to hold the clipboard and write. So...where did the wallet go? It must have gone in my pocket by deduction..unless I was stupid enough to actually give Mr. Grand Theft Auto my wallet to hold while I signed..and then just forgot about it. Was I THAT stupid? No...I prefer to think I put it back in my bulging pants--but that gas station is the last place I can definitely say I had my wallet.

Where it went is a mystery, my working theory is maybe it fell out when I was getting out of my car at my parents--you know, because I have bulging pants. There were no stops until I got to my parents.

What's worse is I realize my bulging pockets have totally interferred with my Wallet and Car Keys Extrasensory Detection (WaCKED).
To the females out there with purses--men have a 6th sense about their wallet and keys. We can leave our wallet on a table, and usually realize that 'something' doesn't feel right about our pants before we take 10 steps away. We immediately go into our PPD (Personal Pat Down) where the missing element is usually spotted. Indeed, the keys and wallet are on your body so much you if feels like a part of you.

So not only did my WaCKED totally fail me last night I feel totally violated. Even when I undressed for bed, after unloading my bulging pants I know I should have realize something was amiss, but because I had so much crap in my pockets nothing felt "wrong". It's like the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark, where Harrison Ford is trying to remove a statue and fool the booby traps by placing "crap" that weighed the same amount--except this time no rolling ball came down to clock me the head to tell me "Hey Doofus..where's your wallet?"

It wasn't until I was asked at 4pm today to drive my nephew to band camp that I noticed was wallet was gone. Muy muy gnashing of teeth.

So, here I am on the verge of vacation...no money..no credit card...no driver's license...and a long way from home. :-(

ZOMG...this was the long post I wrote that got moderated that inspired the "I give up" thread.

Update..In Atlanta, have duplicate driver's license and credit cards and cash. Everything is on track. Bad karma is still lingering though...I have a nasty summer cold, but I should be over it before my true vacation week begins.

After all that, I hope you aren't going to find your wallet slid down under the seat and got wedged somewhere. I was almost ready to replace a debit Mastercard last month after using it at a drive-thru and found it hiding there.

This kind of stuff usually happens to me if I am really really tired. Hope your karma gets better by the time you get to use the kayak.

A friend of mine was traveling with her dog once and left her keys in the car while paying for gas. You guessed it. The dog locked the car with his paw. Since then (especially if traveling long distance with the dog) I carry a spare key on a chain - just in case.

RiF, I'm so sorry for your troubles, but seriously you should write a book or something. This kinda stuff happens to me (well maybe not this bad, sorry!) when I'm totally overwhelmed and/or overcommitted. You need to move to CA where it's laid back and 'all good'...LOL!

I stopped being able to pay attention after the second reference to "bulging pants."
