My daughter celebrated her 17th birthday today. My son and I wrapped up a few worthless household items (including a screwdriver) in a larger box marked "fragile" as a 'decoy' gift. The 2nd smaller box contained the 'real' gift. We let her choose which one to open now, and which to save for tonight. She wasn't too happy with her choice (the real gift is an iPod Touch).

What gag gifts have you given or received that were memorable?

What a great smile! She looks like she will be a heart breaker of many boys (and men down the line).

Gag gifts? Hmm. I never received many gifts as it is...so gag gifts are not in the picture. HOWEVER, I own a beloved three-legged dog. One year for Christmas, a student of mine (who had met and fallen for my dog) sent me a present. It was a stuffed dog doll leg that matched him PERFECTLY LOL!!!

Somewhere or other i have a photo of him and his new leg.

A guy friend of mine, who didn't have a girlfriend, turned 30 and I bought him a blow-up doll.

Christmas one year, my brother bought me a bracelet. He wrapped and wrapped and wrapped it (all in newspaper) and then put in a box bigger than one you gave your daughter. It took me a good 20 minutes to find the 'prize.'

It doesn't show up in the pic, but was actually gold striped paper... but purposely more plain-looking than the smaller one. She decided to open the larger more plainly wrapped gift first, because she figured the gag gift was in the one in the fancy paper. That psychology degree of mine was finally good for something! Do not try this at home however, as her disappointment was pretty obvious...

yeah, i totally agree... do not wrap small stuff in an over sized box. its a total let down....... .. . . i thought she already had an ipod?

as for gag gifts, i gave my babe 3 packages of her favorite candy (almond joys) for her last bday followed by a package of two 'birds beak' knives from victorinox to replace her lost one and then her real gift - an exacto knife kit for her gardening.

yah, i know... she's lucky she found me

Your daughter is adorable! Did you really make her wait till tonight for the IPOD? Well she has now learned the valuable lesson that good things come in small packages!

When my sister and I were little we started giving decoy or hidden gifts. One year she put a pet ball with a rattle-type bell in it in the box with the dress she was giving me (luckily the toy was unused). Although I knew it was a trick, I couldn't figure out what the noise was... or the gift as she also stuck a big rock (wrapped to protect the dress) in there!

The next year I put little clues around the house. She had to follow the clues to find her gift... which was in the hands of the boy next door that she secretly had a crush on... he was only about 3 grades above her!

One year I got so involved in the gag I actually forgot the gift! ...which was at the store being gift-wrapped. I had to run down there while they were getting the cake ready.

And you guys thought I was just an April Fools pranker... I got experience I tell ya!

When my son was little, I used to send him on a scavenger hunt for his gift. I'd make him run all over the house, finding the clues that would send him to the next place, until after about 7-8 clues, he'd finally find the gift. It was a blast to watch him try to figure out the clues and run to the next spot.

I've done that, too. It's so much fun.
