My car died. Im calling it a "catastrophic electrical failure" or CEF. Car won't start. Nothing electrical works including the automatic door locks. So lets have a pool. How much will the thieves, er, mechanics charge to fix. In theory this could be anything from a loose wire to dead baytery to "need new car".

I'll start. I have $1500.00*

*all denominations in US currency.

What kind of car? Total electric problem sounds like a battery.

Two weeks ago, on my birthday, I attempted to go to Target to treat myself with a new DVD. One block from the store, at a stoplight, my car died in the middle of traffic (and repeatedly thereafter every 10 minutes or so). Faulty sensor of some variety was to blame. Sweet birthday present.

I'm going to estimate your repairs at $500.

If it's a dead battery $150 or less...my friend just had her battery die on her 2003 Explorer & I think it was about that or less.

It also could be the alternator...slightly more expensive, say in the $500-600 range.

It it terribly selfish of me to be grateful that didn't happen with US in the car???

The most expensive thing I've had to fix on my Jeep was freeze plugs (stupid previous owners), and that was 500 bucks. I'd say first go to AutoZone or someplace that will check your battery and your alternator. Then if it actually is some wiring harness problem my guess is....um.....trying to remember what that car make was.....$750?

Well, you could have a very very dead battery. That shouldn't be more than about $100. You could have blown a fuse in the onboard computer, which would be less than $10.
