The key to making them work, is to assign different tasks to each group member, that way everyone is accountable.
The key to making them work is to suddenly have your group members vanish.

LOL! I really do understand, TP. Group projects drive some people crazy.

Every year, I always have one or two kids, in each class, that freak out when I assign group projects. I just remind them that most of the time, they get to work independently, and that learning to work with others, is a necessary skill. I'm also really diligent about making sure that they know, I know, how much work they're putting into the project. Most of the time, these kids are just worried that they'll get stuck with all of the work, or that they'll receive a lower grade, due to a lack of effort from their group members.

In all of the years I have been teaching, I have never given a low grade to a hard-working student. I will dock the kids who fail to contribute, though; I have zero tolerance for laziness or apathy. Also, I never overlook individual contributions, and if necessary, I will adjust the "group" grade, on an individual basis.

Keep in mind that I teach middle school, so what's "fair" for one student may not be the same thing that's "fair" for another student. Now, at the high school or college level, a group grade must be earned together. There's very little wiggle room there.

I'm sorry you're frustrated. What is it that you're working on?

I hate group projects, too. Nobody wants to be reasonable and do it my way.
