Yesterday evening I attended presentations by new master's biology students who were telling about their research plans.

One presentation caught my attention on mating choice in crickets. After all this time reading the boards, I listened attentively (for a while) to see if this research could be translated to humans. The student is planning to test two ideas during the course of his research

Hypothesis 1 Females prefer larger males
(Well, duh?!)
Cricket Experiment
-->mating choice experiments with males of different sizes.

Translation to Humans

Seems like a no-brainer, huh? But we need data!
-->new short-guy threads started on eHA will be recorded and correlated with the number of women who say they don't care about height. This will be cross-referenced with a thread from a few months ago with pages of posters attacking the OP for saying it was her right if she didn't want to date shorties.

Hypothesis 2
Females prefer males with more pulses per chirp
Cricket Experiment
-->Involves recording sounds for analysis by a computer...I think with similar sized crickets (I wasn't paying attention so much at this point)

Translation to Humans
This is where it gets a little tough and I could use some suggestions. First thought is Females prefer males with more actual words vocalized per burp.
-->Mating choice will be observed at happy hour

Important Notes:

Cricket Experiment
In order to separate out size choice from pulse per chirp, male crickets will have their wings removed.

Translation to Humans

The beer will be removed.

So does anyone think we can learn from the cricket world?

I will choose the cricket who makes me knees in the weak when we kiss. Oh, I already have!

Or maybe you prefer a man with more cats per square foot?

Square paw my dear Meli, square paw!

However, on to the rest of you and making sure you find that cricket that leaves you sockless and breathing heavily in a delightful little puddle of delight and joy --

What kind of crickets do you want?

p.s. If they pull the wings off the crickets so they aren't chosen on sides, won't the crickets reject them as not being suitable mates because they are flawed (law of nature - wanting the most viable mate)?

That's a good point! I'm not sure--I will mention it to the people involved.

It's true that all the smartest people are in CSC!

If you think of pulsating in a more dancelike fashion (think hips), there may be another way to analyze that.
