All right, I am the first to admit I have plenty of faults of my own. But at least when you are in a relationship, and something just totally rubs you the wrong way and you can't live with it, you can leave it.

Not so with annoying co-worker habits. So here it is. I work with a nail biter. Doesn't sound too bad, right? Except this one is a male in his mid thirties and is constantly chewing on his fingers. The nails are long gone, he gnaws on his skin actually. Many times he has the appearance of a little child who is sucking on a blanket and will do this at any time, anywhere. He gets "lost" in this activity as it seems he cannot be approached and able to engage in conversation during these times. For extended periods of time and when things are stressful, well forget it. He will even gnaw and gnaw, then when he has something to say, will sort of spit out whatever he chewed off and start talking.......ewww! But he does this to the point that they bleed and he wipes it on his shirt. The paperwork he gives me has blood smears on it and the bandaids in our first aid kit are dwindling in supply.

I try to hard to stay understanding and in control when I have to endure this but man, is it tough! Does anyone else have co-worker habits they endure daily??

Does a noisy eater count? My coworker keeps a bag of licorice in her drawer and she can be heard smacking on it all day. That's about the best I can come up with...

That nailbiting thing is pretty bad. Sneak some bitterspray on his keyboard when he's not looking or something. hehe ok I know that's not nice...maybe you should just confront him and offer some solutions

Here are some of the honest-to-God conversations I've had to have with grown men on my staff and the last one with an admin.

1. Could you please wear an undershirt under your [very thin] shirt? You're asking me why? Oh because the women in the office are complaining that they can see too much of your body. Yes, Yes, I see your point. Erm..well I believe the purpose of the undershirt is to provide a more covered up appearance. (And then stat loses it completely with this inane conversation and says) LOOK. It's kind of just like us women having to wear br a's okay? We don't like it either but we do it so they don't dangle in ur face at work. For cripes sake, wear a damn undershirt [so we don't have to see your nipples and belly, she does NOT add]

2. Hi, meant to talk to you. Not sure how to say this but I have had 5 people tell me that your habit of jinging coins non-stop in your pocket is making it hard for them to think. Furthermore, 2 of them said they couldn't hear themselves in the last meeting and your cube neighbor had to hang up on a client and move to a conference room due to its loudness which the client heard on the other side of the phone. Er..yes I do appreciate that it is just a nervous habit. But it's making other people nervous too. So please try, okay?

3. Yes well, this is a difficult conversation for me to have with you, but the people in the cubes around you are requesting that you please not toot in the cube. They find it offensive. Yes I hear you but I believe a lot of people would consider a bathroom a more appropriate place than your cube.

4. Hey. Need to talk. Tobacco usage in the office is against the company's policy and one of my key statisticians is asthmatic and had to be taken to the hospital yesterday because of the smoke seeping under your door.

5. Oh hey, one quick request. Would you mind not spitting your tobacco chaw spit into the kitchen sink? People cook food there and they're uncomfortable with it. What? Oh I see. Well I think most people would consider the bathroom sink more appropriate. Okay! Thanks! Good chatting with you as well.

6. Hey Lady, come in and close the door would you. Well I hope I don't offend you as I relay this conversation but your somewhat skimpy attire today combined with the thigh high stilletto boots and the long leather coat over it caused one staff member to report that he thought there was a hooker in the build...what? Yes, he did say hooker, not looker. I should tell you in his excitement he was rather loud and the President heard about it and I got in some trouble. Could you please go home and change?

Of these, 2 with master's degrees, 3 Ph.D.s

We have a guy in our office who always says "HEH" or "WHAT's 'AT" when you say something. It's not that he's hard of hearing, he just habitually says 'HEH' like he's deaf every time he's spoken to and you have to repeat everything.

Why not get a new job instead of complaining about people behind their back? alternatively, just talk to them if you think you have a valid point.
