I haven't kept exactly with the prescribed reading plan for the year, but I'm still on pace to have read the entire Bible by the end of the year. In fact there are several books that I will have read twice. I thought I'd share a few things that I've learned.

I discovered that it has been a long time since I read through all of the Old Testament. I'm seeing a lot of things I hadn't seen before. I've always enjoyed history of any kind so I'm particularly enjoying reading through the history of Israel. I'm in II Kings right now, and my plan is that as soon as I finish up II Chronicles that I'm going to start over in Genesis and read through again while everything is fresh.

There are a few books that I don't plan to read through again any time soon. I'm not discounting their worth as Words of God, but for me reading through them once every couple of years is going to be enough. For now these books would include Leviticus, Job, and Ecclesiastes. I haven't read through all the Prophets, but I might include a few of those. My feeling about Job is once you've read through it you kind of get the gist. Job was tested. Job stayed faithful but still displayed some attitudes that God had to deal with in the end. His friends were clueless and typically representative of religious types who always have an answer and something to say that sounds good but isn't necessarily based in truth and wisdom. In the end it is God alone that has true wisdom and understanding of what has happened to Job.

I also had some thoughts about David that I'll start a separate thread for.

I wouldn't rule out the things you can learn from books where you think you have the gist of it down. I randomly opened up Job a few months ago, and was quite struck by something. I forget what chapter it was, but it was after Job's "friends" had run out of stuff to say, so the younger of them decided he needed to speak up.

I was struck by this: he used lots of biblical language and vocabulary. I imagine that had you been there, at that time, his arguments would have seemed quite biblical and compelling. Yet he was utterly and absolutely wrong.

This was quite interesting, as in the past year I've had that very experience -- someone using biblical language and terms to try to support their views, and yet they are utterly and absolutely wrong. Sometimes what you're going through at a particular time will show you new things in scripture you didn't expect to find, in places where you already thought you had the gist of it.

Yes I definitely agree that you can go over Scripture again and again and find new things. As I start to read through the entire Bible again here in a few months there are just a couple of books that I'll probably skip.

Another thing I discovered was just how much I enjoyed Deuteronomy. When Jesus was tempted by Satan all the Scriptures he referenced were in Deuteronomy.
