Satan has been nagging me and beating the stew out of me ever since I said, "Jesus, I surrender." (About 6 years ago.) And, at this point, I am pessimistic, tattered, worn down, skeptical, irritated, cynical, and just plain MAD!I would like to request any prayers you feel led to pray for help and guidance. Thanks. I could use a little cheering up, and I'll even start off....................

Even when you don't know how to pray - the Holy Spirit does and makes intercession for you. When you are His - you are special!

Hey Immanuel, I think we've all been there at one point or another. The one encouragement I'd give you is that when you're going through something like this you're making more progress then what it feels like. Once you're on the other side you're going to look back and see just how much was accomplished, and you're going to be surprised, pleasantly surprised

Immanuel, your post is especially poignant to me right now because I have recently had the opportunity to compare my lifeto that of an unbeliever and Ihave a particularly strong appreciation for the life that my faith has given to me. We all have ups and downs in life and sometimes we can sink to depths that tempt us to believe that our troubles are worse than those of others – that all of those people out there who are smiling and taking joy in life could not possibly understand what it is like to live through bad times such as ours. At such times one can choose to draw into theirselves to such a degree that they care only about their own needs, bitterly disappointed that they did not have every wish granted, that they of all who ever been born should have been exempt from hardship, striking outin anger at those who they perceive as having lived charmed lives.

But here is where my faith has stepped in to take a hand in my life. I have confronted hardships every bit as difficult, every bit as painful as anyone else. I could make you weep if I felt led to do so. But I do not define myself as a capable, successful person based on the jobs that I have been laid off from. I do not wait for the world to fill my pockets, expecting my due,gripped withself-pity and self-righteous rage when I reach down tofind them empty. I do not define myself as a loveable, valuable person based on the fickle fidelity of those who have betrayed me.I do not find comfort only from those who love me, but also from those whom I love regardless of whether that love is returned or not. I do not limit my capacity for joy only to those times when all is going according to plan. I do not base my confidence or my hopes on what happened yesterday. I do not view life according to strict formulae, vainly trying to apply mathematicalprinciples to human variables with the expectation of onelogical outcome. I do not find myself standing in baffled stupification, absorbed with the wall that stands before me.I can ride the waves without fear no matter how high the swells are, no matter how cold the water is, no matter how strong the surge pulls at me because I can always see the shore, the safe harbor that awaits me in the distance. My eyes are not set on a predetermined course with a carefully plotted path and a rigidly conceived goal that is of my own making. I can dodge the obstacles along the way without losing my direction. I can bend in the wind without fear of snapping because my roots are deep and forever in touch with that life giving water. And I know Who to give thanks to for all of that :-)

I ran into this hymn a couple years ago. It is sad that many churches no longer sing the old, heartfelt hymns. Praise songs are nice, but there are times when we hurt and praise is not the feeling we best express--we need to express the pain.

Lastly, here is a long list of verses that I put together years ago. I printed them out and put them up on the wall next to my computer so I would be constantly reminded of them.


James 1:2-3 (NIV)
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,

Philippians 3:20-4:1 (NIV)

Beautiful, P – just beautiful! There is nothing like a powerful praise song to create energy. There have been times where I have been so caught up in a praise song that I felt as if we were all standing there physically joined as one, all with our eyes and our hands and our hearts stretching up toward heaven together, our worship united in one single voice. But, with the old hymns there is something so special for one who is aware. With these I feel connected on a very emotional level with the Body past, present and future. They are like old friends that know me intimately. And when we are all standing together singing them I am so incredibly conscious of those around me. I see the understanding looks, the light touches, the nods and the soft smiles that are exchanged, burdens shared, encouragement given. I know these people and they know me. So many times just as a I feel tears welling up in my eyes I have felt a soft, wrinkled hand slip into mine and I look down into the eyes of a very dear woman who knows my pain, one who I too know has lost the husband that she spent a lifetime loving. They feel as if they were written just for me, and yet at the same time they bring me closer to others that I know feel them every bit as profoundly as I do myself.

WOW! Now that's what I call encouragement! Man, those posts were so touching, they almost brought tears to my eyes. Thanks ladies and gents! I am going to ponder on all of your messages so they can sink deep into my heart. I am quite familiar with the process the Holy Spirit uses to speak through people, and He has through all of you. It's almost as if God knows exactly what I need and need to hear.As a token of my appreciation, I will say some special prayers of thanks and support for all of you. Though my heart may experience unrest and uneasiness, I know in my heart that God is taking care of me just as it should be. This might give you a clue as to my present state: I have been praying Psalms 139: 23-24 lately --


Search me, O God, and know my heart;


test me and know my anxious thoughts.


See if there is any offensive way in me,


and lead me in the way everlasting.
