I LOVE the 1995 mini-series featuring my future husband, Colin Firth, as Fitzwilliam Darcy. Perhaps that is why I was so repulsed by the 2005 remake starring Keira Knightley. Now normally I enjoy Ms. Knightley's work. But for some reason her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennett irked the heck out of me. It was horrible. It took me two attempts to be able to watch it all the way through. Then, in order to scrub my brain of all of the insipidity of this "remake", I had to re-watch the entire mini-series again (no hardship there). There should be more regulation of who is able to put Jane Austen on film. This one was a complete dud.

I'm with you. I had the tv adaptation on tape now dvd. My daughter raved about the movie so I watched it with her then showed her the version that I prefer. Needless to say, she enjoyed it far more.

Yes, Colin Firth is delish but he's mine, all mine!!

I suppose I could share, since I like you so much. But you may not have him all to yourself. Can't do it.

After reading the book, I decided not to watch the movie because I thougth it would ruin the book. Sounds like a good desicion.

No Dougie, the '95 BBC version (not this theatrical version) is SO worth watching. They could not possibly have cast any better person as Mr. Darcy! I don't even see Colin Firth when I watch it... I believe it's the "real" Mr. Darcy in flesh and blood. Jennifer Ehle is also amazing!

It is easily one of the best pieces of filmwork I've seen in the last 15 years. It stands alone as any good movie must regardless of whether it's based on a book or not. If you have any appreciation for film in general I highly recommend watching it. OF COURSE, watching it is still no substitute for reading the book also.

OK I'm really commandeering this thread... sorry.

Anyway, I meant to also take my shots at the theatrical version. OK, so I'm a sucker for Kiera. I'm a guy I can't help it she's gorgeous and eloquent IMHO. Certainly this movie was doomed for me due to my extreme bias towards the BBC version, but Ms. Nightly does at least OK.

But for goodness sakes, where did they dig up this "Matthew Macfadyen" character? You might as well have a cardboard cutout of someone and have the key grip read the lines (I'm sure those key grips don't do anything anyway ;-p ) I'm sorry, but he just stuck out like a sore thumb the entire movie. I was wincing every time he appeared on the screen.

Am I just too biased toward Colin Firth or was he actually that bad? I don't know but it just killed me to watch him.

No, Colin Firth is a superior actor by far and got Mr. Darcy down to a t.

Although I was not enamoured of the movie, the soundtrack is lovely. I was listening to it on the way to work this morning.
