My most sustained form of exercise over the years has been weight training. I became involved during my early thirties and made good progress. However, I had no desire to "get big" or to compete. A moderate build and ability to move things were my objectives.

The bench press has been my favorite lift and my gauge of condition. I work out regularly, though not as intensely as in past years. For most of the past forty years my maximum single has been around 300 pounds. I am doing only 235 now (after breaking training) and going back up – but was doing 265 two years ago when training fairly intensively. I'll get back to that at least before too long. Respectable for a guy about to turn seventy.

I once thought that I would become world class competitive if I lived long enough and kept lifting. Surely the old guys would die off or quit lifting and I could be king. HA – not a chance. Some of the OLD Russian guys are still benching more than I did on my best day. Their secret is probably strong vodka (and strong pecks and triceps).

Even though my lifestyle is somewhat mobile, I carry a 310 pound Olympic set and a bench that I built to be capable of being dismantled, plus solid dumbbells through forty pounds.

Here are some stats:

Body weight. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ,215 (decreasing)
Age. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 69+
Best current single (semi-strict form). . . . . . . . . . 235 (increasing)
Multiple of body weight (lift / body weight). . . . . . .1.1 x body weight
Current number of reps with 135. . . . . . . . . .. . . . 22 (increasing)
Lifetime best single (semi-strict form) . . . . . .. . . .335 (at age 45)
Fraction of body at that time . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1.67 x body weight
Have you competed?. . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . One time, local, 2nd place
How long involved in activity?. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40 years

I encourage other lifters to post their accomplishments – and perhaps encourage each other.

Thats impressive stuff JDavid, most I ever benched was around 325 if I remember right, and this was when I was in my early twenties. I'm a weakling now but I might get back into lifting someday. Right now I'm more of a jogger and long distance hiker weighing in at about 170. Which for me is an accomplishment in itself as I was obese when I was younger.

Benevolence,

We have several points of the physical realm in common. I was a runner at about your age – then the pounding started bothering my legs (I always weigh around 200 – a little heavy for extensive running). I took up long-distance bicycling which was easier on the body – until hit by a car (not hurt much but convinced that automobiles and bicycles are not compatible on highways). I have also done a lot of hiking and backpacking, played tennis in the past and occasional racquetball presently.

We both have a connection to Western Pennsylvania. Much of my teaching career was spent at one of the state universities north of you. I wrote about an experience involving Pittsburgh in the "Men protecting women" thread. We also share an interest in conservation – one of the subjects I taught.

Congratulations on the weight maintenance. Losing is good, keeping it off is impressive.

I've had a minor setback -- tore a hamstring water skiing. That has not prevented lifting, but has interfered a bit.

Add 185 x 8 (almost made 9)

The leg muscle injury has been unpleasant for well over a week. The VA health care provider (a wonderful, competent, caring Advance Practice Nurse) says it should heal given time and rest – and gave me heck for water skiing (at my "advanced age"). She just shakes her head at my attitudes and activities.

Hey JD that's really great how active you still are. I really hope to be like that when I'm your age (not saying you're old) and it will definitely be a goal of mine through the years. Sorry to hear about the hamstring though, and the bicycle accident, ack. I actually got on a bike for the first time in years yesterday and rode on a bike trail along the Ohio River in WV with one of my friends.

Racquetball and tennis are definitely my two favorite sports I only wish I had more people to play with I don't get to play either as often as I'd like. Although I did get to play some tennis last week for a while.

I would like to start jogging again some this summer/fall but haven't really got back into it too much yet, if I can do a 5k by the end of the running season I'll be happy.

I defintely aim to get some more hiking in soon. I want to go Ohiopyle State Park sometime this month, I've never been there and have been dying to go there. Thanks about the weight maintenance I pledged to never go back to the way I was when I was younger!

That's interesting you used to teach conversation what type was it more like wildlife management or something more specific like water conservation?

That is very impressive to both of you. I have respect for anybody who takes excercise and staying healthy seriously. As for me...I have been lifting weights since I was 12 years old. No lie. I had a weight problem also. Then shortly started martial arts (Tae-Kwon-Do) and eventually got my black belt.
I then got into amateur boxing and that was my main focus until I was about 24. The intense training made it difficult to hold onto muscle mass...so I was around 170 pounds through most of that time.
I will turn 30 next month...have just done consistent weight training for the past years and now way between 210 - 215 pounds. I feel I am in better shape than when I was 18.
Gonna see if I can post my most recent pic (with my hair messed up..lol)

Current bench - 295 for 6 reps (I never do singles ..so don't know my max bench.
Squat (ass to the ground) same weight 7 reps.
Stiff leg deadlift- 275 for 7
Wide grip pullup- 8 reps bodyweight

I do many other excercises...but use those mostly as my gauge of progress. Keep up the good work guys. I'm impressed!!!!
