1. Name
In my opinion, there are very few groups - if any - that will ever be as successful as 'Completely Stupid Conversations', but we can take a lesson from that groups name. It doesn't disclude anyone! We all know how to have a stupid conversation!

By definition a group usually centers around a theme. The challenge? Keep your theme while trying to be as inclusive as possible.

2. Attract people

From time to time I see a new group with an interesting name only to find when I get inside that there isn't even one thread. The person who started the group didn't even care enough to start one.

When you create a new group, create at least one thread if not twenty. Populate the group with activity and interesting thoughts. Start with a welcome thread. Make people feel at home!

Then add other threads to get people involved.

Hi Dennis. I just wanted to say thak you for your first 2 topics. They have given me ideas ad they are made up of good advice.

I made the group "red flags" I will take the advice and come to this group more if I get stuck again.

This is GREAT advice, probably the #1 key to starting a Group which will ultimately be successful.

A lot of folks think "if I build it they will come" but you need to also give them something to talk about and someone to talk TO/WITH when they arrive (even if it is only you!). You might be talking to yourself for a while when first "seeding" your Group with topics but you'll find that once people find and explore your Group they are much more likely to respond to an existing topic than to start one of their own if there are no topics there to begin with.

3. Don't advertise your group in posts or threads of other groups. This comes across as needy :P

Not sure about the needy part but probably best to secure the other Group Owner's permission before advertising your Group in theirs.

If you do, you might be able to swap better placements (like sticky for sticky or something) vs. just plugging in a reply to a topic.

I see fear in the competition...

If you read the thread though you would see that I was just yanking their collective chain. I don't think Mr. Preistess was actually complaining since that occured over a month ago... and there really is no threat to their number one status.

They are welcome to do the same in our group. We really don't share the same type of membership for the most part... stupid and humourous are really two different animals...

I really have no need to advertise the group at this point... we have been in the top five most active groups now for almost 9 months since its inception... placing a link to threads helped increase activity in individual threads... that is more like a community service than anything...
