Not sure about the needy part
Maybe desperate would be a better word? =)

For which one of your groups... the successful one that you inherited? Or the one you started yourself? Tough isn't it...

Nope, not at all. But you're just being derisive :P

The "inherited" group is successful on its own right ... though one might question the label of inherited some since the original owner was banned just after the group was founded.

The other group is a test group, created a year and half ago to perform administrative actions within groups without disrupting user experience elsewhere. Originally it featured a thumbnail photo of Alicia Witt as the group image.

Group success/failure is determined by the group members, not the group owner ... and that's why so many groups fail, since the owners think they need to dominate the scene and try to force the gears moving.

... and it isn't a competition between groups owners either ...

I came here to help people... What have you done here so far besides calling me needy and desperate?

Yes... the person who started CSC was brilliant. People followed him there from Intelligent Conversation. He was banned but not before he created the atmosphere from which you now all thrive..

I don't think that this software allows one to administer from one group to the next... but perhaps you could tell us how that is possible since this thread is meant to help other people...

Your comment shows your inexperience... When looking at inactive groups it is obvious that they failed because:

The Name or concept of the group didn't attract people's interest. (By owner)

The Owner failed to start the first thread.

Both of these are critical in the beginning and done or not done by the owner. But you wouldn't know that as your experience is limited because the group you own wasn't started by you and it had mass appeal (something the original owner created) so you have had to do literally nothing there except (now take credit) for something you had nothing to do with...

I didn't call anyone needy or desperate ... I described a type of behavior as being such (slightly tongue-in-cheek), since I thought it deserved mentioning. You're not the only one who's taken liberty to advertise a group within another group.

Your comment shows your inexperience... When looking at inactive groups it is obvious that they failed because:

(a) I don't take credit for anything ... I don't feel a need or desire, and you won't find me bragging ... it's just the role I play. I already stated that the group's status is owed to the activities of the members, rather than the owner (as are all groups). You can't force participation, only enable and encourage (to some extent).

(b) I'm not inexperienced in these matters ... quite to the contrary. These forums mimic the dynamics of earlier Web forums, IRC chat groups, MUDs, and numerous other groupings (yes, even real-life group dynamics). They follow a fairly consistent cycle.

I was part of the earlier "popular" groups as well as now. They gain popularity mostly due to initial popularity ... people don't like to chat in empty chat rooms, and they don't like to post in empty groups. This may be a factor as to why the Dating forum (aside from it being the first and most general category) tends to receive the most attention.

(c) CSC gained much of its membership through people wanting to join others. Not because of the original owner and much of the membership is unrelated to "IC". I've worked to maintain abidance of board policies, within the group, without stifling others' enjoyment (though there were a small number of times this took restraint on my behalf, when views were expressed diametrically oppositional to my own) ... while also encouraging "ownership" of the group by those whom participate, such as how the group photo came about, and managing issues that pop up from time to time. I think I've done a decent job.

At the same time, I've watched a lot of groups strangled by their creators ... their membership is largely inactive (if they ever were) and the vast majority of threads were created and dominated by the owners ... owners need to recognize when they move from encouraging participation to hampering it. We really don't need eHA littered with inactive groups or soap boxes.

Apart from these things, group owners can't really do all that much ... the groups will form, grow, and die on their own accord. Yes, even CSC.

Most of the eHA members active today were not here a year ago ... and most of the currently active members will not be here at this time next year. Newer board members will coalesce into new groups, which will then divide into smaller groups, and then they will wane as well.

Cue Elton John.

I'm sure that the readers here will benefit from your vast experience.

You stated:

"The other group is a test group, created a year and half ago to perform administrative actions within groups without disrupting user experience elsewhere."

How is this done?

The same way as other groups are created ... no invites were sent and no participation was desired, though some people still joined (go figure). I'd have deleted the group long ago, but eHA had (probably still does) a problem with owners deleting or leaving a group.

BTW you know you can alter your group's name, if you feel it would generate a wider appeal by not referencing Atheism (religion tends to divide) in the title, right?
