Actually, the article says 35,000 years ago. But I don't know how they can carbon date when the ivory was carved. Pretty detailed though, I must say. Cave men liked their BBW!

Perhaps they can look at the amount of oxidation of the ivory where it had been cut as a means of gaugeing when it was carved. but more likely it can be dated by dating the layer of sediment in which it lies, which can be done by dating layers of sediment laying above it, either by microfossils embedded in the layer or by imbedded artifacts or bone.

I find it interesting that this statue, at 35,000 y.a., is a minimum of 6,000 years older than the 25 - 29,000 year old Venus artifacts. And they guardedly say too much time had gone by to make a connection between thetwo periods in history (i.e. the earlier history does not influence the latter, the latter being a completely remade set of thoughts and intentions).

Did the people of 35,000 years ago wonder about their time? About where it was they found themselves?

Bet you sex to donuts it was the sediment layer. It’s awful ballsy of an archaeologist to go nicking an artifact for dating unless it is an edict handed down by the Almighty Grant-Holders.

Venus figurines like this one are rather common through a broad time scale. They aren’t just women- men and children have been found as well. There are gob-lots of theories on what they mean (some are pretty darn funny- sex toys for men? that was one theory.) and no bloody way to prove them… But we know for darn sure that we had anatomically modern humans back then (I mean specifically the brains here, zombie boys and girls). A lot of time and care went into these figures. I think they had some special importance.

And modern brains means that all the equipment that we have up here, they had back then. They were *human.* They had the capacity for love and wonder back then, and based on what happened next, I’m pretty sure they did. Looking up at the stars at night and thinking about the time that separates me from the guy or gal whittling that piece of ivory- an eyeblink on the universal time scale- it makes me smile.

My reference to 6000 years - is that is how long most Christians feel the earth and man have been in existence.

6000 years… is that a strict interpretationists reference by chance? Echoed by those folk who humbug carbon dating, ice core dating, and the like, who track the history of the earth by following the letter of the Bible, genealogies and maybe-perhaps-gaps and all?

My inner archaeologist loves those guys! They’re the reason a lot of archaeology and physical anthropology got funded! *grin* Religion proclaims the new age of the earth… and ditch diggers get money to do more carbon dating. Oh, the irony…. *grin*
