I am going to be getting on birth control soon, but before I see my doctor I'd like to know experiences others had with various types, and if there's anything they recommend.

I'm looking for something that will not cause weight gain, and most importantly something to help increase/restore my low libido.

Any recommendations?

MIght be helpful to know a bit more about you. Have you had kids and do you want any say in the next 5-10 years? How old are you?

I used the nuvaring for quite a while and really liked it. Low dose hormones. Basically it is a ring you insert once a month and you take it out three weeks later then insert another the next week. I had no bad side effects and it helped maked my period not so bad both physically and emotionally. Negative is that there is no generic so more expensive but it was worth the extra cost for me.

There are lots of other options like IUDS and shots or patches or various pills. A good gyn can help you with this. I doubt anything can restore your libido but I do think normal bcp's do interfere with some women's libidos.

I'm on the POP (progestin-only pill, or "mini-pill") and have had no side effects--no weight gain, no increase in body hair, no effect on my libido or other moods--so I like it just fine. But it is less effective than the combined progestin/estrogen pill. (I had an allergic reaction to one of the combined pills and it's uncertain now whether I can take estrogen at all.) On the down side, it is a daily pill and you have to be meticulous about taking it at the same time every day.

I've never used any other form of contraception (from "my end," anyway).

I've read that going on birth control (or entering menopause!) can, in some cases, "restore" a woman's libido because she's less worried about accidental pregnancy and thus is more receptive to sex. But that entirely depends on what's lurking behind her low sex drive in the first place.

I'm 25, and no, I've never had any kids and nor do I ever plan to.

Yeah, one of the things I am worried about a lil' is the fact that b/c can CAUSE a low sex drive. And that's the last thing I need given how low it is already. lol

Once I get my lab results back from my hormone test, if my testosterone levels are way down, I was thinking about asking my doctor to put me on some sort of supplement. But would that interfere with the b/c?

We can tell you what birth control we've used, but every woman is different. This is a conversation you need to have with your doctor, even if you use a couple of our suggestions, to be sure it is right for you.

I've only ever been on birth control for the hormones, because mine were out of whack for awhile.

I can't take the pills at all. IUD's do not prevent pregnancy, they prevent the egg from attaching to the wall (which is like a very early abortion, and something I, personally, am not comfortable with). I used the shot and it does make you hungrier which is where the weight gain comes in. You have a lot of control on if you allow it to make you gain weight, if it is a side effect that you get.

Another thing to know about the pill, is that antibiotics render it useless. There is a whole slew of people called "birth control babies."

I do not know about the nuva ring but I would talk to my ob/gyn if the need for birth control arose again.

Just please make sure you talk to yours so that you get the right one for you. The trial and error really sucks. At least it did for me.

Every BC method works differently for every woman. I am currently using the Nuva Ring. Love it. Took a bit to get used to for me and had some spotting issues, but overall, very good. Lowest dose you can get hormone wise. I've actually started growing less hair in spots where hair usually grows (the unwanted kind). My sex drive is up (tho no one to share that with). I did have about a week where I would crash for an hour or two every afternoon. That went away as well.

I've used the shot (Depo?) a few years ago. That one was great the first time then knocked me for a loop the second. Kept spotting, and couldn't do anything about it. When I finally got off it, my energy level dropped like a rock and I gained weight.

I did BC pills when I was 18 and hated it. Had to take them every day at the same time. Forgot it a few times and had a couple of scares.

Talk to your doctor and read up on the side effects and benefits of each kind.

any hormonal BC can cause weight gain and low libido.

you really need to talk to your doctor whether a testosterone supplement will interfere with BC.

use condoms- they are healthier for you anyway.

I second this post. I've tried numerous kinds/brands of BC and didn't find one to which my body would adapt comfortably. For me, the trial and error was extremely frustrating, not to mention nauseating, exhausting and down right miserable. I felt ill all the time (throwing up and stuff). People will tell you the estrogen is too strong, the progetrone is too strong, this that and the other, but they are not your Dr.

All I can say is listen to your body and talk to your Dr and nurses. They are there to help you.

If you're in a permanent relationship, and done having kids, I can't recommend a vasectomy enough. I've had it done, and it's less painful than going to a dentist. It's easier to sterilize a man than a women, and the recovery time is short. Guys...don't believe the BS. It won't cause ED, or "dry" orgasms. It doesn't make you less of a man or diminish your pleasure. You won't notice any difference, except in the amount you pay in child support, or how many lawmen are after you for non-payment.
