this post moved from another thread...

god is not good because of some universal standard that god chooses to adhere to. god is good because he is god. god defines good by his very existence. therefore, whatever god elects to do is good. whatever god elects to ban is evil.

if god is bound by some universal idea of good apart from himself, then god is not really sovereign.

thoughts?

I agree notyet.

God is GOODNESS. (period) For me, when I use the phrase, "God is so good" what I'm really doing is recognizing and acknowledging the truth of His Sovereignty.

By Sovereignty, I mean "nothing happens that God doesn't allow to happen." As humans, only able to see the immediate consequences of actions, we tend to label events as "good" or "bad." It is a difficult truth to grasp that everything that happens is "good" because God is Sovereign and God is GOOD. (God--the Father,Son, Holy Spirit One)

Let's face it, we can be offended by God. After all, He had the power to make things easier, stop suffering, heal our sick friend, heal our marriage, etc. etc. right? But He didn't. He chose not to. Now, what do we do with that? Do we trust Him? Let Him know we're offended, angry, hurt, disappointed and sad, but thank Him for His goodness? OR ...Do we hold a grudge, vow to "never let Him hurt us again," and stuff Him away inside a religious box of rituals and traditions?

God is so, so good! I agree that He just is.
I think that all the bad stuff that happens in the world today is a result of sin. It all started with the fall. God allows us to make our own decisions. Sometimes our decisions take us out from the protective covering of our Father. We then need to recognize that, repent and change our way. God does not want bad things to happen to us. I think that it is never His Will that bad things happen to us. He does let things happen because He has given us the freedom of choice and those choices can be in line with God's Will or they can take us out from under His protection and make us vulnerable to Satan's attacks. I think that by the choices we make we can allow Satan to enter in or we can be protected.

God is good because He is Light and He is Love. Wow! LOVE and LIGHT! Those are the BEST! That being said, He is also jealous and vengeance is His. His name is above all others, and His ways are above ours, and so we have no place to comment on Him. One thing that should make us stop in our tracks - He, the Creator of ALL - He personally calls us to be Holy like Him - HOLY!!! Think about that! However, he does not "ban" anything: He tells us what obedience looks like, then cuts us loose to live and choose. Satan goes before His throne, accusing the saints (the believers). The ulimate evil is given this earth as his domain for now. Therefore, evil will increase until Jesus returns. Evil will increase - and you can see it even here. You are a horse standing at the gate to an open pasture - and He just swung the gate open. Now, our obedience and faith get tested - and relationships are a major proving ground.
