Oops. Moderated. Guess I should have said Donkey. That's what I get for using words directly from the Bible.

This was my initial reaction, when I read the response condoning the exercise as well, JB. Therefore, my question to Mr. Cardguy would be: So, if a "secular humanist" were to pose such a question it would automatically be suspect and sinister? ( And, this has largely been the reaction of the Christian community over such hypothetical exercises in similar settings). However, if a "Christian" poses such a question, it is with good intentions? It was such "good intentions," such as saving errant souls, that led to the fires and tortures of the Inquisition.
I don't thinking I'm following you at all. No, I don't see it as automatically suspect and sinister for the exercise to take place in a secular context. The exercise is what it is, a way to make people think about how they value people, and to discuss it with others. In context, it was also a way to see how people react to differing opinions and any conflict which may come from that, as there are plenty of both when working as an RA.

To be completely honest, it gets really frustrating to talk with you when you decide you know the hearts of other Christians (e.g. throwing in that line about the inquisition, among others). I really try hard to assume those I am interacting with here are acting out of love, but that kind of extra needling and hyperbole causes me to struggle in that area.

Having been an RA myself , I'd say the activity is extremely relevant....not something I'd choose for an interview process, but certainly for training. A major part of being a good RA is being able to see value in all kinds of people.

Somehow, I do not believe that an RA at a Christian college will deal with too many Jewish rabbis. The people in the group were going to accept him on the basis if whether or not he was a Messianic rabbi or "Jew for Jesus." It seemed that "value" was based upon Christian affiliation, or what they could contribute to the rebuilding of a "Christian" society, everyone else would have been out of luck in such circumstances.

Reminds me of the "paraphrased" edition of The Children's Living Bible,1971 edition, that I have in my personal library:

" Saul boiled with rage. 'You son of a bitch!' he yelled at him." - 1 Samuel 20:30 TLB (text copyright 1971).

Now that's teaching our children well in Sunday School!

Whether one type of person in the scenario specifically would be encountered as an RA isn't really the point of such an exercise. I never said your concerns about what some of the other students said were invalid (the scenario would be an interesting discussion for another thread). Rather, I was questioning everyone piling on about how simply discussing the scenario presented seemed inappropriate to them.

Phooey! My edition is off by one year. 1 Samuel is one of the first books of the Bible I read, which I read in my 1972 edition, so I think I would have been impressed if I seen that!
