Recently I've had a lot of anxiety about being alone at home especially at night. I've had traumatic events happen to me in the recent past which have sorta awakened this fear. I often wish I was already married so that I'd have a warm body next to me at night to calm my fears.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to start coping with and subsequently eliminate my fears?

I already sleep with a teddy bear my sister let me borrow, an alarm clock that makes soothing ocean sounds on the sleep setting and a c-pap machine that helps regulate my breathing cycles (I have it for sleep apnia though).

Even with all this stuff... I still get anxious at night when everyone else goes to bed and I'm still awake. It's even worse if I'm alone at home.

They gave me a medication when I start to feel this way, but it takes way too long to kick in.

What I want is to be able to stay awake alone at home without getting anxious and needing to turn to all these pacifiers. Anyone have any ideas?

Paul - you're not alone here. I went through a patch where I was afraid to be in my home alone. Given that I lived alone, it was a pretty horrible time. I lived in the worst crime related suburb of Sydney at the time and was working rotational shift. It was absolutely awful coming home to a dark yard (the landlord would not install outdoor lighting) after midnight.

What I did was try to work out what was causing my anxiety and remove it. I put pressure on the Real Estate Agency and the landlord ended up installing one floodlight. I looked for promotional opportunities at work and moved into a new department which was still rotational hours, but meant I was home by 20:30 if I worked the closing shift. And after the neighbour behind me decided to fire his gun in the backyard (our yards backed onto each other) I took that as the time to move to a safer suburb. It took time to get all of these things in place, it was much easier after each thing occurred - I think because it felt like I was taking control of my fear. If that makes sense?

The other thing I found if I was already in bed and started to pray, I would fall asleep. I don't know why.

Paul, I have been sick with the flu so I havent responded to this important post as of yet. I want to encourage you in knowing that their is a way for you to be free from all of your fear. I am living proof of this very thing and am willing to walk you through it the best that i can. Their is no real easy answer and for me it was a process that took many years to finally be at a place of freedom.

The one scripture that I used to meditate on is Philippians 4:4-7

This is a beautiful process of how God takes our heart of fear and turns it around for His glory.

Here are some things I have learned through my meditation.
First, God knows that we are going to be fearful and that He understands. Second, He has something better for us than our fear. That is to experience His perfect Love for our hearts. Perfect love casts out fear!
Third, our fear is developed in our minds. This is the place where we need to seek to find relief from our fears. Yes their are physical things that are needed to be done that effect our fear or are a result of our fear but our mind is where it matters.

That leads me to the process. This comes after the but in vs 6. Prayer, supplication and thanksgiving. With these were are to make our request before God.

The result is the peace that SUR passes ALL understanding. This guards our hearts and mind through the person of Jesus Christ and through this we develop a deeper relationship and love for Him and realise a deeper love He has for us.

But Paul, it is you that needs to be commited to your own heart and do this dificult work of taking these issues of fear before a mighty and loving God in order to recieve His power and might for your life.

I can tell you how worth it is but I would rather hear from you in how you have experienced this for your self. I will be in prayer for you in lifting you up in this task that God has specificly prepared for you in knowing Him in a deeper level and more intimate level.

Consider getting a dog? They are very calming and watch over you while you sleep.
