Hey,

I would like some feed back.. so, feel free to chime in.

I have a co worker/aquaintance who says she is christian. She apparently seems to follow christianity, yet on a recent vacation trip, I saw a different side that left me quite confused. I know during our work time, she would make comments how she likes to go out and have a good time.. dancing and drinking. Okay.

Well, correct me if this is why I am confused. While on vacation she wanted and so did.. go clubbing everyday, coming back at 4am or so, partying and drinking. She also met this guy and within 2 days of meeting him, they went to the beach. I CAN SAY, I WOULD NOT DO THAT without knowing the person. Anywho, she had her bible with her at our hotel room.. and would read it every so often.

I guess, my question is ... does she claim and swears to be a christian.. or is that even christian behaviour?.. forgive me if I may sound ignorant but after this trip I would not go on vacation with her again. She was too wild for me.

Good question.

I think to try to answer your question, it's important to understand what you perceive as being acceptable Christian behaviour and why you believe behaviour outside those parameters to be unacceptable.

From your description, it seems to me that you have doubts your colleague is a genuinely a Christian. Why? Was she drunk when she was drinking? When you say she went to the beach with him within two days of meeting, did they just go to the beach?

What's your own understanding of Christianity and how does it not apply to your colleague?

There are worse things than having a good time. You can be a christian and not follow a single rule in that book. It depends on your relationship with God and the intentions behind your actions. I get drunk and party every so often. I've been a bit of a whore every now and again, but I am a christian. I believe in the Lord, I love the Lord, and I am very open with him. I know my sins and don't make excuses for them.
With that said, even if she is being more obvious about her sinful nature, do you believe you are without sin? Are you not casting judgement on this woman and her relationship with the Lord simply because she is a little wild? Everyone sins and all sins are equal. Part of being Christian is admitting to those sins and knowing that they are such.
My friend and I used to discuss this and she said "with facts come faith and with faith comes actions" And it's true. We don't become Christian and all of a sudden change our lifestyle completely. That's fake. That.... isn't truth and will result in one becoming fed up and annoyed and cause them to fall off the path quicker. As your relationship with Christ grows you'll start to WANT to change. You'll want to be a better person. And slowly your lifestyle will change.
Biggest thing you must remember is, a lot of the literal rules in the Bible were created by the State. Christianity, the religion itself, was created by humans to control people and make them happy with their situation in life, mainly the poor. So really right and wrong lies within us and our intentions behind our actions. If we act out of anger, hatred, revenge or any other negative or harmful motives then those are sins. To be Christian, is to love. To cherish those around you, help when you can, and enjoy life. Because life is a gift from God.
This time on Earth is, to me, a bigger gift than eternal life. Because here, on Earth, we get to make mistakes and be confused, and be stubborn, and he will still love us. He will still forgive if that is what we want. Our time on Earth, is when he's spoiling us, and eternal life is the reward for not taking that for granted.... at least that's how I view it. I'm going to enjoy my time on Earth, I'm not going to fret about rules and proprieties and other manmade rituals. I'm just going to love God and all he's given me and be thankful every day for how much he loves me in return regardless of my human ways.

There is a difference between discernment and judgement. I feel that the former applies WRT to followmesky's post, as in she was seeing two distinctly contrasting behaviours from her colleague and she wrote she found this confusing.

"Biggest thing you must remember is, a lot of the literal rules in the Bible were created by the State. Christianity, the religion itself, was created by humans to control people and make them happy with their situation in life, mainly the poor."

To which State are you referring? I believe Christianity was created by God, not humans. Why do you believe otherwise?

Actually there is a set date in which Christianity was created. Just like there is a date when the pope was given power by the state. I can't give you the exact facts, as it's been awhile since I've studied them and honestly I don't like to mis speak. And yes God created religion in general, he created everything, even time and space, but the literal christian religion that many of us follow was created by people to keep the poorer or lower population of peoples content with their life so they wouldn't riot, in essence. Learned that in a few history courses I've taken over time. You gotta remember, there are many other religions out there that are a LOT older than christianity. If God had literally created religion, don't you think christianity would be the oldest?
I personally don't believe in organized religion, I read and study the Bible because I feel most of the morals in it are well, morals that are fair and just to all and should be practiced even if you don't believe in God, just to be a good person in life. I guess, I don't like the idea of putting God in a box, which is what organized religion does so often.

Oh, and I didn't mean to imply that judgement was being cast, it was simply curiousity on my part.

Okay, I think I understand a little better now your response. Here are my thoughts:

~ Unless the teacher is teaching in a Christian School, then chances are that the curriculum is being set by the Education Department of the Government. I remember our English teacher going spare over some of the curriculum we had been set for my HSC years. Therefore, when it comes to teaching re Christianity, if the person doing the teaching does not profess to be a Christian, I will disregard it. For how can a non-Christian seek to teach Christians about Christianity? (This probably sounds very arrogant and I certainly don't mean it in that vein.)

~ No, I don't believe Christianity is the oldest religion. I believe Christianity began when Jesus died. Before then, the Bible records other religions, including Jewish Law, Islam, other gods, names of idols - I'm not sure if they are all referenced back to a specific religion though.

Organised religion. What do you mean by organised religion? Religions where people pray at a certain time, or do certain things like fasting etc?
