I am involved in other threads that speak to the idea of community but this is the place I can share my prayer.

Lord,

Give me your eyes that look beyond my own narrow experiences and help me seek to see the heart of the other.

Help me to listen from that still small place where you speak. If I feel attacked by another, help me to look back and see how my own responses may have contributed to the defensive response. Don't allow me to stay in the heaviness of judgment but teach me to let your spirit do its work in the hearts of others while I focus on allowing your spirit to do your work in my own heart.

Help me to grow, soften the soil of my heart so that new relationships can grow from seeds I may have once rejected because my blinders kept me from seeing the heart longing for acceptance just like mine.

Lord, where I do need to confront, help me to find a way to do it from love and understanding that with all the words that can be written, I likely still do not have the full story behind the words I am reacting to.

In the name of your love which is greater than my understanding and encompases the world and all who are in it.

Amen

*****comment added on June 9, 2010. These words stand as true today as my prayer as at the time they were written. If you have read this prayer as it is meant, then it is what is behind my words I speak. This is still my heart prayer for this community. Thank you for bumping this thread, notyet, so that this prayer could be shared once more with all.

God, if you exist, and if you care, and if you can, teach us to see the divine spark in our neighbor, especially the neighbor we all agree is unlovable. Teach us to run before him or her calling out "Make way for the image of God!!!" Teach us to do this tothose we call enemies and we may yet have peace in our times.

On Sunday at our church, we talked about those areas that hurt and where there is the feeling of hurt by others. We were asked to do a three minute free write which we then nailed to the cross symbolic of letting Christ bear the pain for us. I want to share what I wrote with you.

Write for the ones who come my way.
Write for the ones who want to stay.
Write for the lonely, write for the proud,
Write for the ones who scream out loud.
Write for heartache, write for grief
Write for all who seek relief
Write for the one in condemning hands
Write for those who don't understand
Write out sorrow, write out pain
Write for those who feel the strain
Of love that's broken, children cry
Write for the ones whose love ones die
Write you heart God, broken too
Write for those who so need You

Father,

For those who seek You, help them turn to You.

For those who have found You, help them to listen to You and share You.

For those who are too hurt to look, heal them so that they know You.

For those who are too proud to look, help them see the folly of their ways.

I shared this prayer with a very good friend and I hope it touches those who read it here:

A Franciscan Benediction

May God bless you with discomfort

At easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships

So that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger

At injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people,

So that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.

May God bless you with tears

To shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, hunger and war,

So that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and

To turn their pain into joy.

And may God bless you with enough foolishness

To believe that you can make a difference in the world,

So that you can do what others claim cannot be done

To bring justice and kindness to all our children and the poor.

Amen

This is a prayer from another thread on here, but it is an important one to think about as we post here.

"God, give us wisdom to look beyond ourselves and see the longing for you in the hearts of others. Help us realize that there are seekers who come and read here who are hurting and searching for escape from the pain and hurt and lostenss in their lives. Help us to point those seekers to You as we speak your mercy into the darkness in addressing these very real questions in the hearts of others. Grant us merciful heart as we acknowledge with Paul in Romans the awareness that the judgment we will be judged by is directly related to the judgment we place on others.

Lord, let me stand with those who have chosen to be your hand of mercy in the lives of others, both in the life of those who have been hurt AND in the lives of those who have hurt others by their actions. Never allow me to incite others to take that choice to turn from you to another by my actions.

Thank you for the strength of your power so that I can know that you are a God that can reach through the seemingly hardest heart. Help me, Lord, to pray for and show love to those who I regard as an enemy because of the harm they have brought to my life or to the lives of some who I love. Thank you that you are willing to work from within me to help me discern what is your spirit in the words of others.

Help us live your love through our lives.

O God, help us."

This isn't technically a prayer, but it is a song that really touches my heart and calls me back to thetruth of grace and mercy that we are called to share with those around us. It's not by a Christian singer, but to me it is a prayer and a call to live Jesus in all things.

Thank you for this moment of spiritual reflecticon!
I sure needed that today
Burton Cummings may be a Christian - not sure, but I think so years ago now.
My children and I, when we were new Christians, listenened to his singing on the radio and even afforded a tape or rwo of his.
Thank you for that piece of music.

This messsge of yours so related to my latest message - it was on dicorce but that which I wrote was about being forgiven - which is, in itself, freedom, a freedom many if not most church-goers misunderstand or simply forget.
Independent lot that we all are
